Delete emails from inbox in Exchange 2010 and not subfolders
MRM version 1.0 might allow you to do this. Come across this discussion when looking at another "subfolder" question: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvrcompliance/thread/e27fce9f-feee-4b12-8374-0b0ead974a70/ It looks like MRM 2.0 is less granular, less subtile, in this respect. Please mark as helpful if you find my contribution useful or as an answer if it does answer your question. That will encourage me - and others - to take time out to help you.

Hello I'm trying to figure out a way to delete emails from the inbox that are older than 45 days. I do not want any of the emails in the sub folders to be deleted. Is there a powershell script that will accomplish this? I'm running exchange 2010 w/sp1 Thank you

Hi wthfnsanford, If you want to use Retention Policy to delete the mails in Inbox, you can create a RPT(Inbox Type) to delete the mails in Inbox, and you should create a disabled Personal Tag applied to subfolders. However, end users may need to appliy Personal Tag via Outlook 2010 manully. For more information, please see: Understanding Retention Tags and Retention Policies http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd297955.aspx Please remember to mark the replies as answers if they help and unmark them if they provide no help.
