Default location when inserting a hyperlink in Outlook 2010

I'd like to change the initial location the "Insert Hyperlink" dialogue box uses when it opens.

Issue: we don't send files intra-office via e-mail; instead send a link to the file via a hyperlink in an OL 2010 message.  These files are almost always on a network share, drilled down a level or two (or three, or four, or five and yes, I know such depth creates its own issues).

System configuration:

  • Windows 7 64-bit
  • Office 2010 Profession; 32-bit
  • Computer is attached to a domain; Server 2008 is DC with Server 2003 on 2nd server.
  • IMAP is the e-mail protocol (we are NOT on an exchange server)
  • NTFS Permissions allow access to files

Remember: Not trying to change default attachment location; I'm trying to change the default hyperlink location.

THANKS in advance for any help anyone can offer.

As far as I know, you can't change hyperlink location without moving My Documents.

Yes, it will be great for Microsoft to develop a default location for hyperlinks in Outlook (MS have already developed functionality to customise default locations to save documents in Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc).

Our organisation is trying to enforce the same policy not to email internal documents, but rather hyperlink to the location.  The complaint is that though it is effective, it is not efficient having to drill down several folders and a drag-and-drop is just easier.

I happened to be online and saw your question. I've struggled with this forever and never did find a solution, but I have figured out how to "cheat the system" to a certain degree. We have the same issue with the drill down in our office, so I created a folder in my default "My Documents" folder with a leading "1" so it would appear at the top of the list ("1-Matters"). Then, inside that folder I created shortcuts to the places I hyperlink to most frequently.

(To create a shortcut, just go to the destination folder, right click on it and select create shortcut, then drag the shortcut over and drop it into your "1-Folder" in "My Documents.")

Since there are only about a half dozen or so folders that contain the majority of my files this has accomplished basically the same thing has changing the default location without actually changing it.

Hope this helps if you're still looking for solutions.

I was having this same issue and lfbartlettesq's work-around did the trick for me. Thank you! I had to drill down to Antarctica and was sick of clicking.
