DSN messages disapears if send as distribution group address
Exchange 2007 environment with dedicated edge, hub and mailbox role servers. If I try send out message from distribution group address to non existing address, DSN message no coming back. i trace message and found that dsn message sent from edge server to hub server and after that it disappears. Why and how to fix this?I know, thatI can send as as different user and the dsn messages come back to that user, but there is another problem - i can't forward it to different mailbox by rule - rules on DSN messages not working :(

What option selected for delivery reports in advance tab? Is it set to "Do not send delivery reports"?Distribution Group Properties > Advanced Tabhttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996055.aspxCheck the message tracking logs in detail with |FL in cmdlet and check why it has not gone beyond the Hub server and see the number or recipient in RecipientCount field.Yes, that's true transport rules process certain message types only and which doesn't contain DSN.Understanding How Transport Rules Are Applied in an Exchange 2007 Organizationhttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124703.aspxAmit Tank | MVP - Exchange | MCITP:EMA MCSA:M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com

Delivery reports in advanced tab is set to "Send delivery reports to message originator"In message tracking log is record that hub server receive from edge server DSN massage and thats all. No more records about that. recipientcount field is '1'.I try change group delivery reports setting to "Send delivery reports do group manager". It works but that is not that we need. User who send out not know about errors. In this caseI mean not transport rules, but mailbox rules. Mailbox rules not working on DSN messages...

Hi, Regarding your first question, according to RFC3834: +++++++++++++++++++++++ 4. Where to send automatic responses (and where not to send them) In general, automatic responses SHOULD be sent to the Return-Path field if generated after delivery. If the response is generated prior to delivery, the response SHOULD be sent to the reverse-path from the SMTP MAIL FROM command, or (in a non-SMTP system) to the envelope return address which serves as the destination for non-delivery reports. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Therefore, if you send as the Distribution Group email address, the NDR or DSN message should also be sent to the Distribution Group email address. Nevertheless, according to Question 4 of the following KB, the NDR/DSN messages are not sent to the member of Distribution Group: Troubleshooting mail transport and distribution groups in Exchange 2000 Server and in Exchange Server 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/839949/en-us Q4: Delivery status notifications or non-delivery reports (NDRs) are not delivered to the distribution group. Why? A4: Exchange server does not send NDRs, read receipts, delivery receipts, or out-of-office messages to members of distribution groups. Delivery status notifications are sent either to the sender of the message or to the owner of the distribution group and NDRs are sent only to the owner of the distribution group. Therefore, I would like to explain it is normal that you could not receive the DSN message when the Distribution Group is configured to "Send delivery reports to message originator". Regarding the second question, I would like to explain that it is by design: We do not forward system messages like RR (Read Receipt), DR (Delivery Receipt), NDR and OOF to avoid looping. Outlook does not forward a read or delivery receipt http://support.microsoft.com/kb/281924/en-us For more information: XADM: Non-Delivery Reports to a Distribution List or to a Public Folder in Exchange 2000 Server Are Not Supported http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817220/en-us Mike
