Creating appointments to room/equipment caledar via OWA

Hi,

We have lot of room and equipment mailboxes. Users are using them to reserve rooms and devices. They are using appointments (not meetings) to create reservations.

Suddenly we are not able to create appointments to room and equipment calendars via owa anymore. Even if i have full access or owner rights. Only create meetings is available. Through Outlook everything is OK, users can create both - appointments and meetings.
It is strange that there are some room calenders where creating appointments via owa still works (but all the configuration and calendar rights are same)
If i create a new room or equipment calendar - then also creating appointments via owa in this new calendar is not available (via outlook works).

I am not 100% sure, but probably this problem starts after upgrading to CU7

Exchange Server 2013 CU7 (Version 15.0, Build 1044.25)

Any ideas?

I'd be surprised that it ever worked like you described.  You can't just put an appointment on a calendar without permissions on the Calendar folder.  The way it's designed to work is that you configure the autoacceptance settings and invite the resource as a resource.

Thank You very much for your answer.

What do you mean by "without permissions on the calendar folder". Users have Author permissions on room calendars - so they can create new items and also edit and delete own items.

Yes, if I turn on "accept or decline booking request automatically" it is little bit simpler to create reservations as meetings. But still not so simple as creating appointments. Just open a desired room/equipment calendar and create a appointment there with a couple of clicks. In Outlook it works nicely. Users can just pick desired room calendar from a calendar lists (room/equipment calendars are added/connected to Outlook My Calendars list)  and create a "New Appointment" (reservation) there. But in OWA web interface - only create new meetings are available to shared room/equipment calendars. New appointments are available only in personal calendars but not in shared room calendars. Why it works in Outlook and not in OWA ?

Hi,

According to your description, I understand that OWA cannot create appointment for room or equipments calendar, however it works in Outlook client.
If I misunderstand your concern, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Please double confirm the result when run Outlook with online mode.
Please try to create a new room mailbox, and assign author permission for testing.

By the way, run below command to double check the permission:
Get-MailboxFolderPermission identity:\Calendar

Note: when a user double-clicks New Meeting Request or New All Day Event in the shared mailbox in calendar view to create an appointment or all day event, the appointment or all day event is not directly created in the shared mailboxs calendar. Instead, the appointment or all day event is created in the users calendar, and the shared mailbox is added as an attendee.

Thanks

Hi

Thank you for your answer.

Yes, that is correct. OWA cannot create appointments for room or equipments calendar but it works in Outlook.

I confirm that Outlook is online mode and creating appointments to room calendars works.
I created a new room mailbox and assigned a author rights but the result is same - creating appointments works in Outlook but not in OWA.

Yes, if you create a new meeting then this event is created to user calendar and then shared mailbox is added as an attendee, but appointments you can create directly to shared calendars. Appointments wont go to user calendar.

I also discovered interesting case. When user logs in to OWA and then from there click "Open another mailbox" and open his mailbox again from there - then his mailbox will open with link like that: https://owa.comp.com/John.Smith@comp.com/ and then creating appointments to shared room calendars works!  For example i can copy this link to new browser and the log in and appointments works. But if i log in from address https://owa.comp.com/ then appointments dont work. So why it works when logging in https://owa.comp.com/useremail@sample.com/ and wont work when logging in just owa.comp.com

Opening another mailbox means that the user has Full Mailbox Access right to the mailbox.  Opening another user's folder requires only folder rights, and a user can have rights to open that folder without having the rights to post to it.

I have given all the maximum mailbox and folder rights for testing purposes, but still dont work  (MailboxFolderPermission -accessrights owner and MailboxPermission -accessrights FullAccess)

And if rights are incorrect then it should not work in Outlook also, but in Outlook everything is OK.  It looks like those rights dont take effect in OWA.
