Creating a new mailbox database results in transient error
I wanted to set up a new mailbox database for the spam quarantine as per the instructions here. However doing so resulted in transient errors Mailbox error: An Active Manager operation failed with a transient error. Error: MapiExceptionNetworkError: The problem appears to be due to the Microsoft Exchange Search or Microsoft Exchange Search Host Controller gaining access to the files before the creation completes. Stopping these services temporarily allows the database to be created.

Create the database, but do NOT check the box or issue the command to mount it. Wait 15 minutes, it should mount. The issue is AD replication and communications with the server, if things lag a little bit, the server can't mount the database because the server doesn't think that it owns the database. Kind of stupid, but that's what happens. In other words, create database, chill, mount database.Ed

Thanks for your reply. What you have described is probably the answer. However, ecb crashes during the create phase. This is not correct and needs to be fixed by MS. The fix may very well be to build a delay but it needs fixing. I did find your suggestion dotted all over the web and I did try it. I gave up after waiting 30 minutes! Then found my own fix. I hope it helps others. I'm not sure I agree with the problem being AD replication. There are locks placed on the files being created by noderunner.exe.

Hi Forgman, I will try to involve a next level support engineer in this thread to help you. Meanwhile, could you please check the application event log for the error message to help us research? Thanks. Fiona Liao TechNet Community Support

Thanks. Fiona Liao TechNet Community Support Hi Fiona, Unfortunately the log has done a round robin and I no longer have the entries. So I've carried out a test to try and repro it. Guess what? You have it...it worked and the database mounted correctly. However, when removing the newly created database I was confronted with WARNING: The specified database has been removed. You must remove the database file located in xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx from your computer manually if it exists. When checking, I had found that in fact the database was still there. I could delete the edb file but not the logs. They where locked by a process called noderunner.exe. As a SharePoint developer I've come across noderunner.exe before used by SharePoint search. This is what led me to the Microsoft Exchange Search Host Controller process. After stopping this process I was able to delete the residue of the database. This is easily repro'd and happens every time. Even stranger! I deleted the folders that contained the newly remove-MailboxDatabase with the Microsoft Search Host Controller service stopped. Re-start the service and the folders reappear! I have tried this three times and the folders continue to reappear. Also the recycle bin now contains three versions of the deleted folders. WOW.
