Create container around multiple cells

Hello. I've been trying to figure out a way to create a container around multiple cells to allow them to be sorted by the content in the top-left corner of the container. The image below shows a sample of what I'd like to sort (by column A) and the end result that I'm looking for. Is there anyway to do this without adding a unique number to another column for each group of items (IE set D1= 1, D2 = 1, D3 = 2, D4 = 3, D5 = 4, D6 = 4)?



I am using Office 2010 on a Windows 7 Pro computer.

Your pictures didn't show, did you want to use advanced filter to sort the data?
