Corrupt transaction logfile in E2k7 due to bad block.
Hi, we've experiencing bad blocks on one of our RAID1-sets. Some days ago errorevents started to occur in eventlog: - EventID 11 "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\..." - EventID 24800 "Logical drive 2 configured on array controller E200" located in server slot 3 returned a fatal error during a read/write request from/to the volume - EventID 29 "dmio: Harddisk3 read error at block NNNNN: status 0xc0000185 - EventID 35 "dmio: Disk Harddisk3 block NNNNNN (mountpont h:): Uncorrectable read error I've tracked the read/write-error down to bad block-problem for one of the transaction-log-files due to ESE-events in application-eventlog. The system runs fine as long as users or applications do not touch this log-file. But, when the incremental backup starts or I try to open the transactionlogfile in an texteditor, the eventlog is being filled up with the events mentioned above. The corruption of the transactionlogfile happened intraday, so I do not have any backup of it. The incremental backup will of course not complete because it is unable to open and read the logfile. How can I solve this problem? Is it OK to run chkdsk on an online information store? Thanks in advance.

I would suggest replacing the faulty drive ASAP before doing anything else. This is what RAID is for. Even if chkdsk scans the affected area, I wouldn't risk it. Since RAID-1 is a mirror, I'd suggest breaking the mirror for now (leaving the good drive(s), obviously), then get a replacement drive as soon as you can. Hope you get some more suggestions, though. The weird thing is that the raid (HP raid utility) has not detected any errors on the disk. The bad block is only reported in event viewer.

Yep, Agree with Lee ! You need to replace faulty disk ASAP and take full backup of exchange. Analyze exchange event there after to check more if have any issue. Anil

Thanks for the reply. Full backup will fail as the it won't be able to back up the transactionlog-file that is corrupt. The RAID-controller does not report any errors on the disk, thus I'm unable to know which of the two disks in the RAID1-configuration that is faulty. The only place bad-block message show up is on event-log. Any idea how to proceed?

Is the machine still under warranty? Have HP diagnose the problem. >The only place bad-block message show up is on event-log. > >Any idea how to proceed? I guess that depends on how daring you want to be! Assuming a simple case where you have only one Exchange server, you can dismount the database (you have only on in the storage group, right?) and verify that it's in a consistent state with "eseutil /mh". If it is, MOVE ALL the transaction logs for the storage group, AND the E*.chk file for the storage group, to another directory. Then mount the database. That will start a now log file generation. If the database mounts, make a backup NOW. Yes, NOW. Don't wait. Your old backup won't match the new log file sequence, qhich renders it useless. --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

Hi, I ended up createing a new storage group and moved all the mailboxes to the new database. Afterwards I was able to do a full backup. Thanks for any help.
