Corrupt Database - Outlook has all the good data
Hey Everyone, I need some help. Exchange 2007 SP1 on server 03 R, with fresh (inexperienced) Exchange admin (me). Yesterday, some circumstances (shut off AC, no monitoring) cause our mailbox store to shutdown, corrupting one of the databases in exchange. No backup. I recently took over the Exchange duties, and backup was scheduled for last night, for the first time :( eseutil can't recover it, corrupt logs, dont want to do /R until I ask here. i tried stellar phoenix's edb recovery program, and it seems it can recover plenty of data. 7 accounts were affected (ALL MANAGEMENT, seriously). Their Outlook ran in cached mode, and has all the data! What would be the best way to get things back in order?? my idea- copy all their outlook data to a local .pst. disable the mailboxes in exchange and remove the database completely. then create a new database and recreate the mailboxes, connect outlook and copy the local .pst data back to the mailbox. if i just remove the database and recreate the mailboxes, will the data in outlook sync back into the mailbox? plz help, im not too good at exchange and i think there may be a faster way to recover. thanks in advance.

Have you called Microsoft support yet? It will probably run about $250 (Have a CC ready), but the time saved will probably more than make up for it. :) If you dismount the database you can run a command ESEUTIL /MH <DatabaseName.edb> then look for "Shutdown State", it'll say "Clean Shutdown" or "Dirty Shutdown", it probably says Dirty right now. If it says dirty, tell us what "Required logs" says.Microsoft Premier Field Engineer, Exchange MCSA 2000/2003, CCNA MCITP: Enterprise Messaging Administrator 2010 Former Microsoft MVP, Exchange Server My posts are provided AS IS with no guarantees, no warranties, and they confer no rights.

Here are the options,,, possibly MS support will follow. Try to recover your DB if possible if you are having a good Backup else run rRecovery and repair. It depends on how many users are affected.. you can do a dial tone recovery or restore the last night backup and try replay the Log files. if You restore the backup and replay the log files.. chances are you might lose data if the new log files are not proper and you are unable to commit to your Darabase. If you are able to commit then you have all of your data, If only ten log files are missing and if you are unable to commit to the present database then running repair ( eseutil /p with CARE) as it will make your DB healthy , but you may lose some data ( pref < 10 mb .. size of missing logs ).. Miscrosoft PSS will take into account all of the above and guide you the best way. 1) Restore from backup or create a Dial tone DB 2) run a repair on existing DB ( eseutil /p .. then D and isinteg) .This will create a new DB you may lose some data

Khoj, seems like VlaDeMaN has no backup... VlaDeMaN, copy the mails to the pst file is a good idea in case of data lost. Details,XCLN: Restoring from an OST after Deleting the Mailbox http://support.microsoft.com/kb/163589/en-us Can you find these logs: "logs required - 55483-55493", if they are in the log directory, use Eseutil /r to play the logs to the database: How to Run Eseutil /R (Recovery) http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb123919(EXCHG.80).aspx Last resort, use Eseutil /P to run a repair. Hi, Just a small addition. If you have all mailboxes of the management in cached mode I would create a pst from their computers before connecting again, it could be useful later on. But the advice listed above is good reading to start with. Again as listed above, the fee for MS support might be worth the call to get it sorted out more quickly. /MartinExchange is a passion not just a collaboration software.

Hi VlaDeMaN, Any updates on your issue? Frank Wang Frank, /r wouldnt replay, many corrupted logs. /p failed due to time constraints, we caved in and purchased stellar phoenix recovery. i created a new database then imported the recovered pst's back into their mailbox. i think MS support would have been cheaper, but may have taken longer. thanks for all your (all of you) help, i really appreciate it!!!-- Vlad
