Continuous .pst corruption (Scanpst does not work)
We have several users that are getting the error to quit Outlook and run the Inbox Repair Tool. This is happening several times a day with these customers. I have run a scanpst fixed the errors and got the .pst files back up and running but only for a short time. Is there a fix for this due to its spreading like wildfire throughout the building? We are using Outlook 2007pro

Hi,

Could you please provide detailed error information, it would be helpful narrow down this issue.

For your description, the problem may occur if Outlook data file(.pst) corrupted, you can remove the old .pst file, and create a new one test if it helps.

  1. On the File menu, point to New, and then click Outlook Data File.
  2. Select Office Outlook Personal Folders File (.pst), and then click OK.
  3. In the File name box, type a name for the file, and then click OK.
  4. In the Name box, type a display name for the .pst folder, and the click OK.
  5. Click Tools, point to Account settings..., and click Data Files tab.
  6. Select the new Outlook Personal Folders File (.pst), and click Set As Default button.
  7. Select the old Outlook Personal Folders File (.pst), and click Remove button.
  8. Click Close button, and exit Outlook.

If the problem does not appear in the new Outlook Personal Folders File (.pst), you can import Outlook items from a Personal Folders file (.pst), see How to manage .pst files in Microsoft Outlook ,

If the problem still persists, the problem may related to other function, you can also visit  this Microsoft website: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2000071

Hello,

I agree with what William is saying can you please provide us the exact error information so that we can help you better.

August 9th, 2012 11:53am

The error being given is:

"cannot start microsoft office outlook, cannot open the outlook window, the set of folders cannot be opened,. errors have been detected in the file H:/User/email" (name has been changed for user protection)

use the inbox repair tool (scanpst.exe) to diagnose and repair errors in the file.

We have tried going into creating a new .pst file, Importing the old .pst files  to the new one and then deleting the old. Then with the new .pst file created setting it at default, only problem was with that is the very next day not only did that .pst file get corrupted but, the rest of them did too. We have users here that have anywhere from 5-30 .pst files. We also tried creating a new .pst file but not setting it to default. This method made it so it took 2 days to corrupt instead of the next day, and it was only that .pst instead of all of them.

We also have the customers that no matter what we do or change for some reason they are being corrupted a minimum  of 2 times a day. With these customers we have tried changing their .psts, we have tried deleting all .pst files except for the default, we have tried going in and recreating the users account, we have completed profile rebuilds through our servers, we have even tried to switch the user from thin to thick client and vs versa, still the same problem day in and day out.

Something I forgot to mention is I have made sure that with every user that they are completely logged out of Outlook before starting.

If there is anymore information you may need please let me know. Any help at this point would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Please run following commands test if it helps:

outlook.exe /resetfolders   Restore missing folders at the default delivery location.

outlook.exe /resetnavpane  Clear and regenerate the Navigation Pane for the current profile.

Press and hold Windows Key + R (at same time), type one command in Run box:

outlook.exe /resetnavpane

Note: Remember to include one blank space before the switch and one before each parameter.

Hi,

If used Cached Exchange Mode, please turn it off test this issue.

Another way, please create a new Windows profile, we can follow the steps in the articles to create a new user account to test the issue. If the problem does not occur in the new user account, some settings in the old account are corrupted. We can copy the main user files from the old account to the new account, delete the old account, and then continue using the new account.

Hi,

In case Inbox Repair Tool does not work, you can use the third party Outlook PST file recovery tool to repair the corrupted PST file. When I too faced the situation where PST file has corrupted, I was able to repair it by using this tool. This too worked with the good results. You can get the trial version from the official website and make a trial.

Hello There,

Any problem related to Outlook depends on PST. If your PST file is corrupted, lost or deleted then your Outlook will not work. If your PST files is corrupted then you need to recover it, so first check that your PST files is in place or not. If it is not and you are sure that it got deleted then you can recover corrupt PST and later you can repair it using file repair software.

If the problem is not solved by repairing the pst file with scanpst.exe it means that pst file is severely corrupted and you need a more powerful tool to repair pst file. I have a copy of one such tool called Kernel for Outlook PST Repair, I prefer to use this tool instead fo inbox repair utility as this tool is much easier to operate and repairs pst file from all kinds of corruption issues, even works in scenarios where inbox repair tool fasils to repair pst file.
