Contacts subfolders

In Outlook 2007 I can create a hierarchy of subfolders in the Inbox folder and this is displayed as a hierarchical Treeview in the left pane.

When trying the same thing in the Contacts folder, although the add new folder dialog preserves and displays a hierarchical structure, all the subfolders and the main contacts folder are displayed in a flat single level list in the left pane.

Am I doing something wrong or is this the way it is?

TIA

Hi

I believe you are refering to the Navigation Pane as this flat listing is typical of this pane. The only hierarchy the Navigation Pane will display is when multiple folders of the type in use (Contacts in this case) are found in different connected locations eg your Mailbox and another connected mailbox.

If you switch to Folder List your heirarchy will appear as you constructed it but the Contact (Calendar, Tasks and Notes) will display as flat lists grouped withing their container Mailbox/Accounts.  The only options avaialble for changing thhis pane is Move up or down. Using Folder List however means that you will see all the folders of all types which is typical of older versions of Outlook removing the improvements to the Outlook user interface design to make the porgram easier to use.

It's a personal choice but if you want the heirarchy and your happy to work in Folder List that looks like the only solution for you.

Hello-

I have a similar problem, I think, in Outlook 2013. The pane at the left of the display in the People section lists all the contact folders and subfolders I've imported, but not in a tree view that I can navigate, or collapse into the subheadings. It's just a flat list to describe it as you did in the answer here.

If I right click on one of these and select 'move folder, I do see the list in it's tree view, so the groups are still stored in their hierarchy somewhere, I just can't use it in the pane I work in.

Is a folder view still an option?

By the way, filing in a tree view still works fine in the Mail section. So I can file e.mail messages in tiered folders and subfolders, just not contacts.

Thanks for any advice.

Folder list (treeview) doesn't apply to contact folders listed when displayed in the People Nav Pane.
