Contact photos not showing in reading pane in Outlook 2013

This question is related to this post: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/nl/outlook/thread/07841a68-e361-47ac-947b-699fc6b86025

I am running Outlook 2013 with Exchange 2010.  When I was in Outlook 2010, this was not an issue.

Contacts have photos.  When viewing emails the contact photos do not appear.

I tried using the SEND/RECEIVE >> Send/Receive Groups >> Download Address Book; Did not resolve

I renamed the .oab files in C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Offline Address Books\11d6f6ed-0e4c-49ed-9877-9574f16afa6a\ to .old with Outlook shutdown.  When I started up Outlook, the photos began displaying, but there were only temp files in the folder.  As soon as the .oab files were regenerated by Outlook, the photos were broken again.

As a final means of fixing the issue, I renamed C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook to C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook_old and let Outlook build and entirely new offline folder.  This did not resolve the issue either.

Please advise on how to fix this.

Is there any same contact/people item in your other contact folders? Outlook 2013 have a new function would auto-linking contact, I am not sure whether it effects.

Whatever, please totally create a new outlook profile and re-setup your account to check what will happen.

This seems to have resolved it:

Combine contacts duplicated between non-Exchange sources and Exchange into one contact in Exchange.

Control Panel >> Mail >> Show Profiles.  Remove Outlook profile

Open C:\Users\<username>\AppDate\Local\Microsoft\Outlook.  Delete all files/folders in the Outlook folder.

Control Panel >> Mail >> Show Profiles.  Recreate Outlook profile.

Any one off contacts remaining that wont show a picture: Delete and recreate the contact from the GAL and edit the fields for specific information not included in GAL contact.

Hi John7914,

Thanks for your patience.

I unsuccessful to reproduce this issue in our lab setup. Could you please check if following option is enabled under People(File >> Opitons). Show User photographs when available. Please enable this option restart Outlook and then check.

If this step doesnt resolve the issue. This issue requires in-depth support and access to broken machine.  Please visit the following link to see the various support options that are available to you:  http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?id=fh;en-us;offerprophone . This will help us address your issue more efficiently.

Please note that if the issue you are reporting is due to a code defect in Outlook, you will not be charged for support.

I had those setting enabled before, but because it didn't work, I disabled them.

I re-enabled them to verify if the issue would be resolved. It was not.

I will try one of the other support options. I believe this to be a code problem with Outlook. I don't understand why you need extensive troubleshooting from an end user. Other people are having the issue as well and this occurs on my home and work machine.

It seems to me that you should be able to reproduce and find your own code issues without me having to take the chance on being charged several hundred dollars.

On second thought, I will not try one of the other support options.

I think you should be able to fix your software yourself without my input and I don't have time or money to commit to your resolution.

If you are telling me that the support ends here, then so be it. I'll either do without the photos or go back to 2010, which would be a real shame.

Disabling Exchange-modus with cache solved this problem for me.

As soon as I enable Exchange-modus with cache the pictures disapear again.

That's correct, however if you disable that feature, then you don't have a local copy of your mailbox and Outlook runs slower in large environments or on slower connections.

The reason this works for you is because when you have cached or modus mode disabled, you don't use the offline address book, you use the online address booked straight from Exchange. I believe the offline address book is the source of the problem.

To confirm, I deleted the offline address book by renaming the ".oab" files to ".old" found in:

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Offline Address Books\11d6f6ed-0e4c-49ed-9877-9574f16afa6a

When you do that and restart Outlook, the photos work great UNTIL Outlook finishes rebuilding the offline address book.  When the rebuild of the offline address book is completed, the photos break again.

December 7th, 2012 12:46pm

I know it's still faulty by design. My solutions is indeed just a temporarry workaround untill MS gets a fix out.

I also prefer cache-modus because of my rather large inbox combined with a mobile workstation.

I think your description of "workaround" is appropriate.

I agree, cached mode is required if you are mobile and have a large mailbox.

I just want Microsoft to own up to the issue and fix it and I don't want to have to pay several hundred dollars. I believe I've extensive and quite adequate troubleshooting for them to conclude that there is an issue with the code when it comes to the offline address book.

December 7th, 2012 12:58pm

As I also have the issue with Exchange 2007 and can confirm the behaviour and (not ideal) workaround of using online Exchange mode, I have reported the issue to Microsoft. I will update this thread as and when the report progresses.

Our Exchange system is a 2007 SP3 with the latest rollup system as well.  The machines experiencing this issue were upgraded from Office 2010 latest SP/patch level to Office 2013.  This is when the user images stopped working.

I went to the article you referenced at the very top and read over that information.  I did the steps to remove the OAB and had Outlook 2013 rebuild a new one and then the images started working again.

Please find below the outcome of my case. Credit goes to the Microsoft engineers for these statements.

--------------------

If this is happening to all of your Exchange 2007 Mailbox users, it sounds like you have not enabled the thumbnailPhoto attribute on the OAB to be picked up by your Outlook 2013 Cached Exchange Mode enabled
clients.

Below is a description of the issue you are experiencing, followed by the resolution\workaround. However, please
understand the statement under RESOLUTION.

~*~*~*~*~
The downside is that, depending on the number of users and the sizes of thumbnail photos uploaded, this adds significant bulk to the OAB. Test this scenario thoroughly in a lab environment chances are you may not
want to provide the GAL photo functionality to offline clients if it will impact network or server performance.
~*~*~*~*~*

If the thumbnail photos will bloat the size of the OAB to the point that your users will see a perf hit during the OAB's Full-download, you may want to consider staggering the times your users connect to the Exchange 2007
server to populate their OAB.

Also, this is not an Outlook 2013 bug. It is a design change with Outlook 2013 that is creating the issue. The new People Pane in Outlook 2013 is requiring the thumbnailPhoto attribute to be set, so that the AD Photos will show up in the new view.

========
SYMPTOMS
Contact photos in the People Pane do not display a picture when running Outlook in cached mode even though photos are added in the AD. The photo does display in Contact Card. The photo also displays in both Contact Card and in People Pane when Outlook is running in online mode.

CAUSE
The thumbnail photo attribute needs to be added to the OAB so users in Outlook cached mode can see the photos in the People Pane when running Outlook in cached mode.

By default, thumbnailPhoto is included in the OAB as an Indicator attribute. This means the value of the attribute isn't copied to the OAB instead, it simply indicates that a value exists and that the client should get the value from Active Directory. Hence the photo does display in Contact card when Outlook is in Cached Exchange Mode, even though it's not actually downloaded in OAB.

However, the photo will not be displayed in People Pane when Outlook is in cached mode. This is by design.

RESOLUTION
If photo is required to show up in People Pane when Outlook is running in cached mode then Exchange Administrator need to modify the ConfiguredAttributes of an OAB to make thumbnailPhoto a Value attribute
instead Indicator attribute.

The added advantage of setting the thumbnail attribute to Indicator is that user photos will be available
in both the Contact Card and in the People Pane, even though Outlook is in Offline mode (not connected to Exchange).

The downside is that, depending on the number of users and the sizes of thumbnail photos
uploaded, this adds significant bulk to the OAB. Test this scenario thoroughly in a lab environment chances are you may not want to provide the GAL photo functionality to offline clients if it will impact network or server performance.

The following articles explain the exact steps to add the thumbnailphoto attribute to the OAB.

After the attribute is added, update the Offline Address Book then have the Outlook user download the OAB.

I have that setting enabled already which is why when I wiped my local OAB and let it rebuild it fixed the issue.  We only have 350 users so the 100 KB limit for images * 350 isn't too bad for us and that's even if we had a picture for everyone which we do not.

Dit they say annything about a fix? I mean I know it's a performance hit on my server when a lot of clients go and download all the thumbnailpictures, that is still something I don't want. However when a client is in offline mode but he is connected to the exchange (mobile laptop which is inhouse) why can't he show the pictures then like if he where in online mode....

That sounds like a different issue than the OP is having, which the comment they posted above did have the fix for their issue.  Your problem might be more in line with mine in that the OAB was corrupt which is where an offline user gets the pictures from.

These instructions make mention of Exchange 2007, however the links point to Exchange 2010.  Is there any way to set this in 2007?  The Powershell commands don't seem be recognized.  Can we run the 2010 Management Shell against our 2007 Exchange server to accomplish this?
January 23rd, 2013 4:16pm

The Exchange 2007 instructions are similar to the Exchange 2010 instructions; you have to ignore the Exchange 2010 PowerShell commands mentioned. The PowerShell is only for manipulating the photos and changing the address book as I can see, but importing can be done in other ways and the changes to the addres book are not possible in Exchange 2007 as I know.

For Exchange 2007 you only have to take care of the schema change to 2008 and the Global Catalogue change if you have a forest with multiple domains.

My case with Microsoft is still open for the Exchange 2007 issue with Outlook 2013 as for me the photos are only shown in certain situations, including the resolution case mentioned above. I'm waiting for the outcome of this case as the main photo in the reading pane is not shown and this is obviously the main one.

Regards,

Paul.

We already have photos imported into AD. We have photos for cached mode users working just fine in Outlook 2010 against our Exchange 2007 server, but apparently we need to alter the Offline Address Book to include photos directly [not just the indicator] in order for Outlook 2013 to properly display photos in cached mode.  The only instructions for doing this attribute change seem to be for Exchange 2010.

We are seeing a similar issue, but not only are the pictures not showing up, but no GAL info is showing up: title, phone etc (see photo below). Is this what you are seeing or were you just having issues with the pictures?

I had posted more info on the following two related forums:

I'm also having the same issue as you guys.

Running Office 2013 with Exchange 2007. Photos imported into AD and are visible on Outlook 2010 but not on Outlook 2013. Heck, even the photos from my Contact List do not show up in Outlook 2013.

Just to check, are you guys running Office 2013 standard edition as well? There's seemingly no options for the social connectors on my edition and also no click-to-run updates.

I tried with Office 2013 Pro Plus on another machine and the social connectors, update buttons are all available. Have yet to try with the Exchange though.

February 7th, 2013 1:49pm

I think possibly there are multiple issues here which are getting confused. It seems to me that there is a fundamental issue with Offline Address Book and the people pane/e-mail header pane. Furthermore, there are inconsistencies in the Outlook 2013 UI with regards to contacts in general. There are also inconsitencies in the way the social media plugins interact.

We are also currently running Exchange 2007, have had the AD thumbnailPhotos working for quite some time and had no problems at all with Outlook 2010.

While testing Outlook 2013, the following behaviour is observed:

(If cached Exchange mode is disabled, everything works exactly as expected. That is my benchmark for what follows!)

1. For GAL (i.e. OAB) contacts which have been copied to the user's Outlook contacts, the thumbnail photo displays in the contacts list, however the people pane and the e-mail header NEVER display the contact's photo.

2. If social networking plugins are enabled (let's say Facebook), the people pane and e-mail header also NEVER display the contact's social networking photo. However, the "People" view SOMETIMES shows the Facebook photo (even when the option to do so is disabled) yet the "Business Card" view of the same contact shows the AD thumbnail!

3. On the subject of the "People" view vs. the "Business Card" view, editing a contact from the former brings up the new-fangled stark white "Edit contact" in-line pane while doing so from the "Business Card" view brings up the old window-based contact editor from 2010. Schizophrenic and inconsistent - did Microsoft let the idiots that came up with Metro loose on Office for a day???

4. This is the clincher. Clicking on a person in the people pane, or the e-mail header, and choosing "Open Contact Card" also brings up the new-fangled stark white "Edit contact" in-line pane...but with NO details whatsoever other than free/busy time summary (e.g. "Free for the next 8 hours").

So it seems to me that in cached Exchange mode, the people pane and e-mail header are not picking up any details from Outlook Contacts whatsoever but also they are not picking up details from the OAB either...any details, it's not just the photo.

If the OAB is deleted, when Outlook restarts, everything behaves as normal while the OAB is building. If I look at the people pane of an e-mail, all the photos are there, and clicking on "Open Contact Card" shows me all the details. If you hover over any of the attributes such as phone number or company name, a little popup appears which says  "(Address book)" (if the contact is only in the GAL) or "(Address Book, Outlook)" (if the contact has been copied to Outlook Contacts). Interestingly, hovering over the photo only says "(From address book)" even when the contact is not in Outlook contacts and only exists in the GAL, so there is an inconsistency there.

It the OAB is then downloaded, any contacts who were already viewed in the people pane, still show and behave as above (as if they are cached somewhere temporarily), but any contacts who were not already viewed are broken again (NO details displayed in the pop-up contact card). If Outlook is then closed and reopened, the original completely broken behaviour returns and no GAL contact has any details in the people pane or the e-mail header, even if they have been copied to Outlook.

I therefore agree that there is a bug to be fixed with OAB and it goes beyond contact photos as far as I can see. I agree that the OAB doesn't contain the photo by default (you can see this if you try to add a contact from the GAL when Outlook is properly offline vs. when it's in cached mode but connected to Exchange), but there are in my view three separate issues:

1. In cached Exchange mode, the photo and all detail on the contact card opened from the people pane/e-mail header for people who are in the GAL is always blank.

2. If I have an Outlook Contact for a person, that should ALWAYS be displayed irrespective of whether they are also in the OAB/GAL - so even if the above issue is fixed, if I have a contact photo for an Outlook Contact that should be displayed whether or not the OAB contains a photo for the contact. Indeed any additional data I may have added to the contact should trump what is in the OAB/GAL - these are MY contacts!!

3. If Outlook has a connection to the Exchange server (i.e. is "online" but in cached Exchange mode), I would expect Outlook to lookup the contact photo in the GAL/AD - after all Outlook is merrily querying social media sites like nobody's business, so why would it not query my corporate address book?? I shouldn't have to synch the photo into the OAB for this functionality (and I can't see how this can be done in Exchange 2007 anyway). The only time I would expect the photo NOT to show if I am fully working offline (i.e. no connection to Exchange) - in that case, if I wanted the photos to display I would expect to have to sync them to the OAB.

March 8th, 2013 9:12am

Possible Workaround.

I see the same issue. Deleting C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Offline Address Books\11d6f6ed-0e4c-49ed-9877-9574f16afa6a\ works for a while till Outlook rebuilds the OAB. So, after deleting the C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Offline Address Books\11d6f6ed-0e4c-49ed-9877-9574f16afa6a\ folder, I created a file named 11d6f6ed-0e4c-49ed-9877-9574f16afa6a, so Outlook can't re-build it's OAB :). This worked for me.

This way rest of your mailboxes etc. will be cached but your address book won't be.

Note: 11d6f6ed-0e4c-49ed-9877-9574f16afa6a is an example, you will have something different.

Paul,

Did you ever get resolution with MS on Exchange 2007?  I am assuming that any fix may come in a form of a patch (like the one that allows Exchange 2013 co-existence possibly) since this appears to be how the OAB is being generated (i.e. there is a workaround for 2010).

If you have any new info, it would be appreciated.

Hi Tim,

My case is under investigation with the product group since 21st February. Unfortunately I have not had an update since then.

Personally I've not had much experience with how long it takes to get Office client fixes, however my experience with SharePoint is that non urgent fixes such as this take months rather than weeks to be produced.

We're experiencing the same issues here, but also have an issue where presence information is not available in OL2013.  We have EX2007 and Lync2010 backend.  Gone through all the troubleshooting steps others here have mentioned.  Then came across this thread about the presence issue.

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2013_release-outlook/from-lync-presence-not-appearing-in-outlook-2013/f3435832-9e7e-4d4b-b65e-c0f0b67570e3?msgId=361b28f8-8e34-43d6-8b15-7f21f671629e&page=2

I tried Zhull's solution of setting the GAL as the first address list.  Open Address Book, Tools > Options.  Changed from default "Start with Global Address List" to Custom and then listed my GAL, our custom server list, and then contacts.  Lo and behold, after restarting Outlook, photos and presence info started showing up for *most* recipients.  Weird thing is, it is grabbing photos that users have uploaded to Lync instead of their AD photo (for those who have done so).  But better than nothing and I have presence.

I plan on submitting a ticket to our Premier Support.  The more complaints MS gets the better.

--EDIT--  Workaround was short lived.  Outlook soon reverted to its previous behavior.  I have forwarded the issue to my TAM.

The file you created probably has the .txt extension. You can go to folder options to uncheck "Hide known extensions" and then rename the file to remove .txt extension.

Thanks Roberto Casula for extensive troubleshooting. This is exactly what is happening in my company (only few computers have Outlook 2013).

But, on my personal laptop, all the pictures are showing just fine. There are no issues like the ones described by Roberto. The laptop is not domain joined and Outlook 2013 is installed way before the pictures are imported in AD. Everything is just working.

Someone should kick out people which are responsible for this new "design". They can call it design but as far as  am concerned this is a bug. The same goes for the people responsible for the Metro interface or whatever it is called this days and the inconsistencies in user interface.

I am also experiencing this. I can see the photo in the GAL contact when expanded. I can also see the photo in the Outlook 2013 Info\Account Settings section. I do not see the photo in emails and Lync is not showing the photo when selected to use the default corporate picture.

Hi,

I just installed this fix, and it is working indeed. I can now see profile pictures in Outlook 2013.

But unfortunately I am also experiencing crashes the moment I doubleclick someone's picture to check his profile card. So it's a good step in the right direction, but just not properly fixed yet.

Unfortunately the hotfix does not fully work. While the image and presense information is shown (finally!), the moment you even hover above the image or name, Outlook will crash. Which makes the fix worse than the original situation.

I installed the hotfix and seems to be working good so far. I am using Outlook 2013 with Exchange 2007 SP3. Able to see the photos in the email header now.
April 16th, 2013 2:19am

I also installed hotfix, deleted OAB in the outlook and all works good only with White theme. With others themes(light, dark grey) outlook crashes and view is not correct.

Changing the theme to White helped. Does not crash anymore.

Probably because you have 32-bit Office. You tried to install patch for 64-bit version.

I have the same issue. But we are using Outlook 2013 and Share Point Fundation 2013. After installing the hotfix Outlook crushes indeed unless using white theme but there are still no photos...

Tried that too

Did anyone end up getting these problems fixed.

These links that were posted are no longer valid and the following says that the hotfix has been pulled because of problems. (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2768342)

Any new hotfixes to try?

Thanks,

This hotfix has been recalled by Microsoft. We cannot download it now and also, NO ETA for a re-release at this point since investigation of regression is still underway.

My problem was that upon the first configuration of Outlook the pictures would be present but as soon as the Offline Address Book had downloaded the pictures disappeared.

My Exchange 2010 was configured with the "ThumbnailPhoto" value as an "Indicator" which meant it was only a pointer to the photo in AD.

I deleted the "ThumbnailPhoto" attribute from the Offline Address Book and then added it back in again but with the "Value" flag.

  • View the attributes with Exchange Powershell;

(Get-OfflineAddressBook "Default Offline Address Book").ConfiguredAttributes

  • Remove the "thumbnailphoto,Indicator"
$attributes = (Get-OfflineAddressBook "Default Offline Address Book").ConfiguredAttributes
$attributes.Remove("thumbnailphoto,Indicator")
Set-OfflineAddressBook "Default Offline Address Book" -ConfiguredAttributes $attributes

  • Add the "thumbnailphoto,Value"
$attributes = (Get-OfflineAddressBook "Default Offline Address Book").ConfiguredAttributes
$attributes.Add("thumbnailphoto,Value")
Set-OfflineAddressBook "Default Offline Address Book" -ConfiguredAttributes $attributes
  • Check the value atribute has been set (for me it was now listed at the topof the Value atributes)

(Get-OfflineAddressBook "Default Offline Address Book").ConfiguredAttributes
  • Update the Offline Address List
Update-OfflineAddressBook "Default Offline Address Book"

  • And then from Outlook, download the address book.

Hope this helps?

No, still not fixed.  I've installed all the updates and the contact card in the From field still doesn't show pic, info or presence.

Does anyone have the KB number for the MS fix att

I'm able to confirm that.

I can also confirm that. I'm not sure which update exactly fixes the issue, however it seems to be one of those released as part of the June 2013 update release:

Pierre,

We have confirmed the June 2013 updates fixed this as well.  Not sure which update actually did it though as none of the patches listed mention anything related to this issue...

Thanks

Deleting the OAB only fixes the issue until Outlook automatically recreates the OAB cache again.  Then you're back to seeing no contact picture or details in the e-mail From field.  I've installed the updates and the problem is still not resolved.

Note that you can rename the OAB cache folder (as mentioned previously by others) and then create a text file with the same name as the OAB folder.  This will stop Outlook creating the OAB folder again and thus act as a workaround should you not require an offline cache of your OAB.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2817352 to fix thumbnail Photo display issue.
August 7th, 2013 9:22am

I, as well as my IT guy have not been able to locate this OAB cache folder.  I don't think any of our laptops were setup to have an offline address book.  All of our contacts stay on the server so that we can access them via our iPhones in real-time 24/7.  I have figured out how to make pictures appear in the pre-view pane but it involves fixing one contact at a time.  Having over 2,000 contacts I would prefer a quicker method.  Also, one of the contacts that I had fixed broke again, so this may not be a long-term solution either.

btw: the process involves creating a link by clicking on "Add" from the pop-up contact card, then searching the contact's name, when it shows up you click on it to link it to the unified contact card.  After a few seconds or so, the picture from the full contact card appears on both the unified contact card and on the emails from that contact.

The above link doesn't have anything to do with Outlook or pictures. :-(
June 2nd, 2014 4:21pm

I know this is a somewhat old thread, but we have found similar issues. to answer Turboluis's question, the OAB cache folder is located at %userprofile%\appdata\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Offline Address Books

I had a similar issue, using Exchange 2010 and Outlook 2013. We had GAL photos working, then recently it stopped working and Outlook clients (cache mode) were unable to see the thumbnails. Switch the client to non-cache mode and thumbnails were available. I was able to do the above exercise of creating a file named the same as my OAB cache folder (renaming the OAB cache folder to .old) and all the thumbnails, including users added the same day, became visible.

I just looked and saw that I have a LOT of updates available for Office 2013. Am going to revert my OAB folder and run the Outlook and General Office updates to see if they resolve the issue without the OAB folder workaround.

I have found a pretty easy solution to this.   In Outlook 2013 this is often a result of the Cached Exchange mode being enabled.  I noticed that if the setting was changed from "all" to "12 months" the photos reappeared.  For our company 12 months is more than enough but I don't know if that works for everyone.

Change the Cache mode to 12 months instead of all.  Worked for me
