Considering Exchange 2007 for my work center
Hi,I've been asked to start the process of moving our organization to a more modern e-mail solution and have been looking at Exchange 2007 but I have a question. We are a smaller non-profit organization (by smaller I mean a couple hundred here and there at a couple of sites) so we don't have the greatest network infrastructure and our remote sites are connected by several weak VPN's going over an SDSL line. The connection is enough to replicate AD information around the forest but I wouldn't trust it too much beyond that. Our forest has 5 domains connected to it over these links. So I've been doing some reading up and I'm interested in a lot of the features that Exchange has to offer but I can't have e-mail traffic being routed over our VPN's. Is there a way for multiple Exchange 2007 servers to share AD information over the VPN's but not route e-mail traffic over them?? Or is it possible to run Exchange 2007 in a stand alone mode?? I need Exchange servers to exist in each site because I can't have e-mail drop out for the entire organization just because one site is having connectivity issues that day. Thanks in advance for your help.Chris

You can't have a stand alone Exchange 2007 Exchange 2007 needs one Forest and one Forest can have only One Exchange Organization All Exchange Servers share a common AD You can configure Exchange 2007 Servers in every site but email will flow over the WAN for internal messaging You can configure every site to have its own SMTP connector that connects to the internet avoiding WAN SMTP for internet traffic (for inbound email to arrive at different sites you need different sub domain email addresses like user@site1.company.com There is however one option you can look at but that is lots of work and overhead A new separate Forest for Every site that hosts a Separate Exchange organization and connects to the main AD with linked mailboxes... Not desired configuration I would say Deli

I was afraid that's what the answer was going to be. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I guess I'll have to look at some other options. Thanks again,Chris
