Connect to exchange from home
Hello, from home can I connect to the exchange server by using Outlook of my home pc since I will be on a different network on the internet and not on the work network. I tought maybe I could set it as IMAP but not sure if I need to setup this on the exchange server or if it is enabled by default and can use my work exchange even from Home

You need to use RPC over HTTP feature for this. See http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/outlookrpchttp.html which guides how to configure outlook. However, the Exchange server should be configured to allow RPC over HTTP connections. -- Regards, Vik Singh -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please remember to click ??Mark as Answer? on the post that helps you, and to click ??Unmark as Answer? if a marked post does not actually answer your question. How is your environment set up? Do you have two servers, one for your exchange and one for active directory? I do this for my coworkers at my office. You need to have Routing and Remote Access installed on your server. Then, under Users and Computers in Active Directory, open the properties of the user (assuming you since that is what your question is about), go to the Dial-In tab and Allow Access under the Remote Access Permission. You will then just need to set up a VPN connection from your home to your public server IP using your network log-in credentials.

Also, is OWA (Outlook Anywhere) not an option?

So you cannot install Outlook on a new pc which is not connected to the Exchange network ( no vpn nothing ) and connect to the Exchange server remotely. So from what I understood you have to be on the same network at least the first time to make the initial connection to Exchange and from there on maybe you can set Outlook Anywhere but on top of it and not as the initial step right ?

No, you have to connect to your work network through the VPN in order to connect to exchange and to stay connected to exchange. Once the VPN connection is lost, Outlook will read disconnected from exchange. You also cannot run Exchange and POP3 simultaneously from what I understand (unless someone else can correct me on this). Outlook Anywhere (OWA) is a web-based GUI of exchange. You enter the OWA URL in to your browser and then enter your credentials and it brings up a web-based version of your mailbox database (folders and all).

You are right. Sorry for the confusion. Don't know if you've checked out this article, but this may help. http://office.microsoft.com/en-in/outlook-help/use-outlook-anywhere-to-connect-to-your-exchange-server-without-vpn-HP010102444.aspx

yes already seen. So what I want as an answer is.... Is it possible to connect Outlook to an exchange server by using the Outlook anywhere only. Imagine a new laptop with no connection to the work network and needs to be setup only bu using Outlook anywhere.

Just by quick glance, it should work that way. However, it still does look like OWA needs to be in place. You would point Outlook Anywhere to connect to https://exchange.yourdomain.com/owa

Hi, To connect Outlook with Exchange server remotely, you can use Outlook Anywhere, IMAP or POP3. All of these methods need configuration on the Exchange server. Thanks AllenAllen Song
