Configuring a Front End Exchange 2003 for two Back End Exchange 2003 servers
All, Is there a document which explains, in detail, how to configure a FE server to be used for OWA, and have it route external OWA access to either of two Back End servers? I have read and searched for a detailed document but to no avail. What I am looking to do is the the following: 1. I have two Back End Exchange 2003 servers, with OWA configured on them. Currently, one of the BE servers is accessible via OWA from the Internet. This server also has the SSL cert on it. 2. I just installed a new Exchange 2003 server to be the Front End. I plan not to have any MBs on this server. 3. I made the new Exchange in #2 and FE server via ESM. 4. I exported the SSL cert off the BE server and imported into the FE server in #3. 5. Whenever I try to launch OWA, I get page cannot be found. This is where I am stuck. Anything I need to do better here? Any feedback would be great! Thanks! JC JC

Everything you have done is correct - there is nothing much to it. However if you are getting page cannot be found that usually means the SSL certificate isn't working correctly. You should be able to use HTTP though. Also ensure that the frontend server is patched to the same or HIGHER as the backend server, particularly with Exchange patches. If the backends are higher then OWA will not work. The quickest way to check is in the \exchsrvr\exchweb directory - the version numbers listed should be identical, with the same highest version number on both servers. There can also be problems with the virtual directories. When I introduce a frontend server I will usually reset the virtual directories on the backend server using this KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=883380 Also ensure that require SSL isn't enabled anywhere. Thanks Mr. Simon. I think I still have SSL installed on one of the BE servers which is the main Exchange server. Should I perform a remove on the server to take out the SSL? And how do I reuse this on the FE server? I exported the SSL from the BE server and imported into the FE server but that kept giving me Page Cannot Be Found, or use https://, which I did, and it still says Page cannot be displayed. So I am not sure what I am doing wrong here. Would removing the SSL on the BE allow the FE server to passthrough the authentication to either BE server? Also internal OWA does not work even though I just used http://. I actually read one of your suggestions for another case, regarding the link above. Do I have to reset the VDs on both BE servers that I have? OWA is working on both currently. As of now, I haven't moved the FE into the DMZ, because I want to make sure the FE to the two BEs work on the same network. If I need to reset the VDs on the BE servers, then this will require downtime and I have to notify the office of such maintenance. I will need to do this over the weekend. Thank you so much Mr. Simon for your help thus far. Any further information you can share, would be greatly welcomed. JC65 JC

Hi JC, About how to configure the FE, you could refer to below information: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997801(EXCHG.65).aspx And I want to verify some other information. 1, How do you publish the OWA for the external users? 2, Did you change the FE as the published server? 3, What about the CERT name information? There are some detailed information about what you want. If there still have some issue, please tell us. Regards!
