Configuring Office 2013 Default Font Type via Group Policy / Office Customization Tool

Hello,

I'm trying to get a default font set for all word 2013 Users that access word via the Terminal Server. I have not been able to find any articles that shows how to get it done, though i found this technet link (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc179141.aspx) which says to use the Office Customization Tool, but I see no options for font type/size change in the options when I use the OCT.  Thanks a lot for your help.

You basically have to change the normal.dotm file.  When you modify the Font and the Size you'll see an option near the bottoms labeled "Set as Default" and when you click on that it will ask you to change it for "This Document Only" OR "All documents based on the Normal.dotm template".  You select the second option and then you can copy that normal.dotm file to All Users path.  The default path to the normal.dotm is: C:\Users\%UserName%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates

Hi Chris, thanks a lot for your help, but one more question please. I read an article that says the first time users open word, the normal.dotm file is renamed. If this is true there will be a problem if a logon script is used to copy original normal.dotm template to each user's path, as users would initially have the normal.dotm template that specifies the new font when they log on, but it will get overwritten when they first access word. is this the case? Thanks a lot

Hi Chris, i forgot to add, rather than needing a script to copy normal.dotm to each user , can the normal.dotm be copied to the "default user profile" on each terminal server? thanks again.

It won't be renamed.  Only if you damage it, remove it, or name it something other than Normal.dotm will it create a new one.  Also, I'd suggest you use a login script (group policy) as it won't work in a Default User profile setting.

Chris,

My question extends beyond Word.  We have some older printers that do not have Calibri in them, so any office product that prints Calibri comes out garbage.  Some things simply cannot be changed as needed (ex: outlook body messages can not be changed).  How can I change back to Arial for everything office produces.  Thanks in advance, my users are ready to kill me.

a) I haven't seen printers which use "hard" fonts in over 15 years - are you sure about that?

b) this might help you:

Non Profit group home company still has 10 yr old hardware running on XP with a bunch of old HP 500 deskjets (which amazingly still print), we installed a RDS server but many of the workstations still have usb printers being passed through. They will not print Calibri at all. I will go through all of the apps and set their defaults, I was just hoping there was a global setting. Thanks for your help.
