Conditional formatting does NOT work with cells that contain formulas

Hi, using Excel 2010, I'm trying to Conditional Format cells that contain formulas like the one below.

=IF(D4="A","1",IF(D4="B","2",IF(D4="C","3","")))

If the result of this formula is "1", I want to have the format of green text or icon. I know I have done this on previous workbooks many times, but I just started a new job and it doesn't seem to be working on this computer. Any ideas?

Replace:

"3"

with:

3

same for "2"

Oh my gosh! It was one of those things where I should have walked away after awhile. Thx for the obvious answer!

Thank you for that answer! I had the same question. I did not realize that the "" meant return text, not the actual number. I have some updating to do on this spreadsheet, thanks again!!
