I have a user that has an excel worksheet that has various customer data for invoicing. One of the columns is for Serial Numbers of our product. Sometimes Duplicates of the SN show up so we have a conditional format rule set up to make the Cell fill color blue.

whenever we click on the column to filter the duplicates to the top Excel starts to lag/become unresponsive, then again when you select "sort by color blue".

it does it on any PC we use regardless of the specs.

when we remove the Conditional Format rule all those issues go away.

More Info: some of the S/N's are just a few digits stored as Text, some are a mix of text and numbers. would this have anything to do with it?

Based on your description, I created a Conditional Formatting rule with simple custom data, and formated the Duplicate Values to color Blue, and then sorted the data by cell color. All of these steps worked fine in my own environment.

Did you also create other Conditional Formatting rules with your data?

I suggest you copy the data of this column to a separate workbook and recreate the Conditional Formatting rule. Then sort this column by cell color and check if this issue still exists.

I checked your sample file, and I found I can work with 2 method of sorting your data.

Method 1:
