Client Access server running out of resources, smtp web keeps working.

I have a client access server that after a week stops responding to WMI, remote management, rdp, logons etc.
Port 25 & https keeps responding and accepts new connections.

Memory is set to 12gig, only 1gig actively used.

If you try to logon it hangs on "welcome"
The server is used for SMTP & active sync.

If you keep a session open on the server with process explorer, nothing unusual can be seen, but opening notepad or event viewer no-longer works, click the icons nothing happens.

Killing webservices & transport services does not resolve anything. Only option is a hard reset.

Its windows 2012 standard with exchange 2013 on vmware 5.5 fully patched.

Any idea's?
