Clear text password to pop3 account

Hello all,

I've got a question related to OutLook2007 (tried 2013 also) pertaining to pop3 account configuration not sending the "PASS password[CR/LF]" command in certain condition.

I've joined a Win8.1 surface3Pro to a samba3 domain (NT style).

When logged in as a domain user , if i configure a pop account OutLook is not sending the password during the pop3 nego with the pop mail server ; however if i log in as a local user (iso a domain one) i do manage to create the pop3 account and OutLook is actually sending all the pop3 creds.

I also tested that logged in as a domain user i could telnet to the pop server and authenticate against it through the following sequence :

-- telnet popserver 110

-- user test@maildomain.com

-- pass password

-- list

-- quit

I must confess that i'm completely lost on this one and don't understand why the local user config. is working when the domain one is not as this is the same pop server as well as the same client.

Any help and/or pointer ?

Thank you for your cooperation

Hi,

How did you monitor that the Outlook is sending the password or not? Please let me know so that possibly I can try to reproduce the issue and do further investigation.

Thank you.

Hello,

I've got full control on the pop3 server and have installed tcpdump to monitor the connection from the surface client. If you're familiar with the tool, cmd was "# tcpdump -nn -vv -s 0 -X host IP_of_Surface_Client" ; this is why i've been able to confirm that OutLook is sending "PASS CR/LF" (that's PASS followed by a space then Carriage return line feed line termination) and get back an ERR auth from the server.

In the mean time i've installed Thunderbird and managed to get into the pop3 account without a glitch.

I may convince my user to use Thunderbird iso OutLook but i'm also very eager to understand why Outlook is exhibiting this under windows 8.1 provided that my OutLook/Win7 client on the same domain manage to connect to pop3 accounts without any pbms.

Thank you for your interest on the subject.

Regards,

Cire
