Clarification on Server Roles
Hello there. I am currently running a single Exchange 2003 Enterprise server at my company with about 250 users. I am planning our migration to Exchange 2007 and I am wondering if I can stay on a single server or if I'm going to have to use an additional server to utilize one of the new roles. I do have Trend Micro ScanMail running on my 03 Exchange Server at the moment and Vircom ModusGate running on it's own server. Both of these applications filter spam and block viruses and stuff. Am I going to be able to stay with 1 Exchange Server? Thanks! -Chris

Chris, The only role in Exchange 2007 that must be on a separate server is the Edge Transport. If you don't plan to implement this role, then you can put all other roles on a single server, keeping only a single server in your environment. Keep in mind that there is no in-place upgrade option to from 2003 -> 2007. You must install Exchange 2007 on a different server into your existing 2003 organization and migrate everyone over to the new server. I had to do this migration path, so I ended up with an extra server after the migration. After I migrated everything off 2003 and over to 2007, I removed the 2003 server from the organization. I then re-installed it with 2007, and deployed it as a client access server. So you can stay with a single server, but you might end-up with some extra hardware after migrating, which you can usein another role, if you like. You have to pay for another server license if you do this. Hope this helps. Rob
