Changing domain name
I've never had to do this so I wanted to be sure. I have a client with a SBS03 server with 15 active directory users that also use exchange. They are a real estate company and are changing brokerage houses so they need to change their domain name. Lets say they are going from abcrealty.org to realtyworld.org. What's the easiest way to do this keeping everything else the same. Plus, they need to keep their old exchange e-mail addresses active from abcrealty.org for at least 3 months forwarding them to the new domain e-mail addresses at realtyworld.org. Is this possible on one server box? Thanks

Just add the domain to recipient policy. I would suggest running the Connect to the Internet and configure email wizard, but I think that will remove the old email addresses. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP Blog | Exchange Resources

So it is possible to rename the domain? What's the easiest way to do that? Basically, they are going from realestatecompanyA.org to realestatecompanyB.org. I have never had to do this before and would prefer not to have to rebuild the server. Thanks

If they want the WINDOWS domain renamed, then a rebuild is the only option available to you. Microsoft don't support renaming the WINDOWS domain on SBS, and while people have tried it is usually a failure. However the WINDOWS domain has nothing to do with the email domain. You can add the email domain to Recipient Policies and just get on with life. The Windows domain does not have to match. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP Blog | Exchange Resources

I was thinking of just adding a new recipient policy for the new e-mail addresses. Is there any complications to leaving the internal domain name alone? I can't think of any but this has never came up for me before. To clarify; Current internal domain is ABCpros.org Email go to: name@ABCpros.com They will be changing website from ABCpros.com to XYZpros.com (hosting is with an offsite company) New e-mail will be name@XYZpros.com There going to have to pay for the old email domain for 3 to 6 months which will forward to the new corresponding email addresses. After that time period they will cancel the old email and web service to ABCpros.com Like I said I don't see any problems with leaving the server alone and adding a new recipient policy but I just want to be sure I'm not overlooking anything. Thanks so much

That is what I suggested in my first post. The Windows domain and the email domain are not related. They can and often are different. The web site has nothing at all to do with the Windows domain. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP Blog | Exchange Resources
