Changing distribution group into an actual exchange account ?
Hi, I have a distribution group says sales@contours.com , now I want to change it from a distribution group into a real account. Reason is that they want to be able to use thisemail address and do task under outlook and other featuresI think that's reserved for an actual account. Is there a way to do that without losing all the previous emails ? I am thinking about just removing the SMTPunder the"E-mail addresses"part in the properties, and setup a new account with the exact name.. would the exchange get confused by that? My theory is by doing this, email no longer would go into the distribution group, but into the new account.. Would this works ? Thanks for any inputs !

Thanks for any inputs ! Well, a mail-enabled group has no mailbox. It's just an email addressand a list of addresses to send email to. There's no way to convert agroup to a user.If you want to create a user and a mailbox and then assign the group'sSMTP address to that new mailbox that's okay. Just change the groupsSMTP address before you try assigning it to the new mailbox. :-)---Rich MatheisenMCSE+I, Exchange MVP--- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

Hi Rich, Thanks for the reply! Should I go ahead and delete the SMTP under the group ? Because I am going to create a user that's exactly the same name as the group.

Hi, I think that you need to remove the Group before creating the user with same name as the Group. Thanks,Mike

OxYI;First, we should ask what tasks people want to do that you feel would be best served by a mailbox? If you really do want to have a mailbox, I agree with the consensus - you need to either mail-disable the group or delete it first.Karl

Hello,The reason they want to change the group into an actual mailbox was because they want to use the Tasks feature under outlook, they would like to assign stuffs under that group and utilize the task function under outlook to do some kind ofticking system. With group, I don't think they can do that, so I was asked to create an actual account while the same time preserving the existing one. I suppose the general consensus is to mail disable the group, but maybe I do have to delete the account if there is a confusion, I will give it a try and report back.Thank again !
