Changing User's Title Causes Primary SMTP Address To Change
I am seeing some odd behavior in the EMC, where changing a user's title on the "Organization" tab of the mailbox causes, both, their primary SMTP address to change, and the "Automatically update e-mail addresses based on e-mail address policy" checkbox to get re-activated. Has anyone seen this, or know why it is occurring? The behavior only seems to be intermittently repeatable. Thanks.

Are you sure you're using default email policy without any customization? You may would like to check the following KB's Understanding E-Mail Address Policies http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb232171(EXCHG.80).aspx How to Apply an E-Mail Address Policy http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb201677(EXCHG.80).aspx Managing E-Mail Addresses http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996954(EXCHG.65).aspxArun Kumar | MCSE:W2K3 + Messaging | MCTS:Exchange 2007 | MCTS:OCS 2007 R2 | ITIL-F V3

Hi, This problem could be caused by the email address policy. Please Check your Email Address Policies under Organization Configuration / Hub Transport / Email Address Policies. I reproduced the problem in my lab: 1. Create a new email address policy that includes mailbox users in the IT Group Department: In Condition section, select "Recipient is in a Department", in the specified word, type: IT Group. In "E-mail Address" section, set the SMTP address to "Last name and first name initial (smithj)" 2. Then I change a user's Department attribute to "IT Group". After that, a new SMTP address is added for this user and this new SMTP address is set as Primary email Address. Also the option "Automatically update e-mail addresses based on e-email address policy" is checked automatically . Hi Arun, That is correct, under E-mail Address Policies in the EMC, all I have is the Default Policy, it is not customized, and it is not even applied. I am familair with, and have read through, the links you provided, but will check out them again. Thanks, Adam

Hi Gen, Thanks for the suggestions, but I think my scenario is a little different, because all I have is the Default Policy, and it is not applied. In addition, none of my users have the "Automatically update e-mail addresses based on e-mail address policy" checkbox checked. I agree that is seems like the e-mail address policies are coming into play, but why? They should not be. Thanks, Adam

Can you run the command get-emailaddesspolicy | fl >c:\temp.txt and then paste the contents of the resulting text file in the forum. It sounds like Adam is right on track with it being something related to policy but without more info it will be hard to troubleshoot further.
