Changing Active Directory user name has caused email to stop working
Hi I have a rather strange occurrence on Small Business Server 2003. Recently one of our users has got married. I have changed all of her details on Active Directory Users and Computers, and everything appeared to be working correctly. She logged in with her new user name and email etc. was all working fine. The only issue she had was that when she sent an email it was showing as from her maiden name. After searching the internet I found an article on another forum which stated that in order to change the display name you had to delete and recreate the mail box associated with the account. I have done this and everything seems to be displaying correctly. I now have one problem remaining. Her email address was Julie@domain.com . It didn’t incorporate her last name so there was no need to change it. Now when people try to email her (either internally or externally) they receive the following message:- Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients. Subject: Sent: 03/08/2010 10:38 The following recipient(s) cannot be reached: Julie Surname on 03/08/2010 10:38 The e-mail account does not exist at the organization this message was sent to. Check the e-mail address, or contact the recipient directly to find out the correct address. <domain.net.uk #5.1.1> Oddly if she emails someone (again internally or externally) and they reply back to her she receives the message without any issue. I thought it maybe a cacheing issue but I have flushed every cache I can think of but to no avail. Anything you guys can think of would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Jim

Check the properties of her user account and confirm what email address was stamped by the recipient policy. Make sure the original Julie@domain.com still is listed as an email in that tab. If it is not, then re-add it manually.Thank you, Ibrahim Benna MCSA+Messaging, MCSE+Messaging, MCT, MVP "Did you backup your Information Store Today?!"

Is it only with people replying to emails that were sent prior to this change? If so you need to add her old legacydn as a x500 address to the new account to maintain replyability. If it is people sending her emails check if they are picking them out of the global address list. If so check the OAB generation to see if it has ran lately and updated her record. If you have the old legacyDN added as a X500 address on the new user the users that have her in the nickname file will continue to work without having to go around and delete the entry from the nickname file. Hi Scott Thanks for the input. Somehow I manged to post this issue twice. Someone at the other thread managed to help me with the answer if anyone has a similar issue. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvradmin/thread/931c5a4a-4c79-4264-91cd-f200c9127b0f Cheers Jim

I took a look at the other entry and yes deleting the entry will work, although a rough fix depending on the size of the evironment. If you can add her old legacydn as a x500 address you can spare yourself that pain. Hi, Yes, that is the NK2 issue which cached the legacyExchangeDN as X500 address that is used to send the email for Outlook. Since you delete the original user account and recreate it, the LegacyExchangeDN is different even though it has the same name. When you sending the email in Outlook, the old X500 address will be used which results in failed sending the email. You can rename the NK2 file of the Outlook to resolve this issue. Or add the old LegacyExchangeDN as X500 as Scott said. Thanks Allen
