Changed primary SMTP for user - can't add AS account with new SMTP

I changed the primary SMTP for a user and am unable to add the active sync account to an iPhone using the new SMTP address. If I add the account using the original default SMTP it works fine. The new primary SMTP IS being used correctly with outbound emails - I just can't add the account using the updated primary SMTP.

Anyway to make that email address acceptable when adding the account to devices?

Does the UPN happen to match the old SMTP address?

Shoot. Yes it does. Internal domain name is a .com - same as email address.

Is that the issue? ...any 'easy' way to correct?

I'm not sure that it's the problem, but you can change the UPN to match the new address and try again.  Users don't always understand that there are two settings to configure, the e-mail address and the logon credentials.  If they're putting the e-mail address in for the logon credentials, it won't authenticate.
