Cannot start POP3 service on Exchange 2007
Having an issue and the error messages don't seem to be helpful. I used to have Exchange on a local IP address 192.168.1.90. I changed the IP address to a public one. 66.xxx.xxx.xxx Problem is, ever since then I cannot get POP3 to start. If I change the address back to the .90 address it works fine. In the console I get this error trying to start it. [PS] C:\Windows\System32>Start-Service msexchangepop3 Start-Service : Service 'Microsoft Exchange POP3 (MSExchangePop3)' start failed . At line:1 char:14 + Start-Service <<<< msexchangepop3 Right clicking on the Microsoft Exchange POP3 service and clicking Start produces this error. "The Microsoft Exchange POP3 service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs." I thought I changed all locations for 192.168.1.90 to the 66.xxx.xxx.xxx address but I can't make any sense of POP3 not working, or why it refuses to even start.

You changed the actual Exchange server's IP address to a public address? Is the rest of your domain on a public address as well? In this day and age, outside of universities/colleges and data centres, assigning public IP addresses directly to a server is unusual. Most locations would be using NAT. Have you done anything else to the server since changing the IP address? Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP Blog | Exchange Resources | In the UK? Hire Me.

I have a feeling that it's not starting because that IP range is not defined in AD sites and services.James Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com

I know it's not ideal but it's temporary anyway. No, haven't done anything else. If I change the address back to .90 it works fine. But then obviously mail.server.com doesn't resolve properly. I looked in Active Directory Sites and Services and saw nothing where an IP address would be, or where to enter one :( What I find weird is the server is receiving mail fine, and sending fine, but I just cannot get POP3 running, which is how the users connect to it.

You don't change the IP address of the server to match the DNS, but change the DNS to match the server. For an external DNS provision you would usually use NAT on the firewall to translate the external IP address to the internal one and for the internal DNS (so the external name works internally) you would use a split DNS system. Typicall Exchange services won't start if it's IP addresses aren't defined in AD sites and services. I'm leaning to that or a FW issue.James Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com
