Cannot determine why some users receive distribution list emails when they are not currently members of the DL
We have had a few external contacts ask to be removed from distribution lists, but when we look up their account in EMC it doesn't show them being a member of that distribution list. Sometimes their external contact object is not a member of any distribution list at all, yet somehow, they receive mail addressed to the distribution list. Other times we have several layer deep distribution lists that have other distribution lists as members and it is very tedious to find which membership ti one of these dozens of lists is the one that causes them to become a member of the one they want to be removed from. Is there a tool or shortcut that shows a diagram or some other property of "how did this person become a member of this group? I suppose they could receive mail auto-forwarded from another account or if they are a delegate for another member of the distributions group. Is there a tool to log or find this when users don't know why they are receiving mail addressed to a distribution list when they are not directly or not even indirectly a member of that group?

No tool, start with message tracking it will typically show some indication of the forwarding.James Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com

Is there a command or other way to list all members of a distribution group including those mailboxes or contacts that are not in the group as a member, but are members due to membership in another group that is a member of this group? Another option is going to the recipient or contact and seeing a list of every membership and sub memberships below that showing every additional group each distribution group adds them to all in one list?

You could just disable auto-forwarding for the "Default" Remote Domain. Most often it's Inbox rules on Outlook clients that are the cause of these situations. --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

Hello, I suggest you follow James's suggestion, use message tracking to help you check on this issue. This way you can find the sender of emails, help you check whether this emails has been forward or not. Thanks, EvanEvan Liu TechNet Community Support
