Cannot connect to Institutional Account using Outlook 2013 (web access ok)

Hello,

I have a student account with the University of Cincinnati. I had been using Outlook 2013 to access the account but started having a popup requesting username and password. After uninstalling and reinstalling Office, I cannot configure the account. The message I get is that it cannot establish a connection (encrypted or unencrypted). I have tried the connectivity wizard only to get that it is not able to autodetect the settings.

All this time, I have able to connect using the web app (at the website mail.uc.edu). I don't know if it is relevant, but I cannot log in using the page portal.office.com.

I have been searching the forums but have not found a solution that works. Any guidance on where to begin?

Thanks

Your best bet would be to contact your school's IT department.  They should  be able to tell you how to configure Outlook based on what they allow and which product they are using for email (may not be Exchange).

I already did and they were unable to help. They were pointing to the procedures to setup Outlook 2013, which use autodiscover to automatically configure everything based on username and password. When some of the things they tried did not work, they told me to contact Microsoft.

The first question is do they actually use Exchange? I checked the link in the post and it didn't land me on the OWA page.  So that leads me to believe they do not, but could just have their own log in page to front the login to OWA.

If they don't have Exchange then Autodiscover and automatically configuring everything is not going to be an option b\c Outlook only knows how to do that with Exchange 2007 and later.

They also have to be configured to allow Outlook Anywhere from the outside as well.

You can also give the remote connectivity analyzer a try as well.

Honestly, their response couldn't more wrong.  Without knowledge of how their email infrastructure is setup there isn't alot of support anyone outside of them can give you.

Hi,

Please make sure you are using an Exchange account in Outlook 2013. If the issue only happens to one specific users, please do the following changes in client side:
In Control Panel, click Mail > Show Profile. Select the account profile, click Properties > E-mail Accounts > Change > More Settings > Security > Select Negotiate Authentication and uncheck Always prompt for logon credentials > OK.
Then make sure the Server name and User name are correct and can be checked in AD by clicking Check Name.

Additionally, please try to clean up the cached credential in your computer. Then fill in with the format of UPN when it prompted for credentials next time and check the Remember my credential to save it. About how to remove cached credentials, please follow these steps:
1. Launch the Credential Manager from Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Credential Manager.
2. In the Generic Credentials section youll see a setting for [MS Outlook] which will include your SSO details. Click the downward-pointing arrow to the right of that value.
3. In the expand details, click Remove from vault. Then Outlook will no longer have a stored copy of your password.
