Cannot checkout any document on SharePoint 2013 without internet connection

Hello,

When we try to open a document (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) in Office 2013 which is stored on SharePoint 2013, the document is properly downloaded and opened. We see the notification on the top to check out the document. We are working on a intranet without direct internet connection.

When we click (in any Office application) on the check out button, we receive the following message :

Microsoft Office cannot complete the operation because the network is unavailable. Check your network connection and try again.

This is due to the network connectivity check of Office 2013, but how can I deactivate this as we working on a private LAN ? I already tried

  • setting registry keys of EnableActiveProbing to 0
  • changing local policies to not show local connection only notifications on my network settings
  • disable all the privacy options in the trust settings of Office

But nothing seem to work. Office keeps on checking network connectivity. What is blocking my check out action here ?

Any ideas ?

We are having troubles with Outlook connections to SharePoint lists as well. Everything works perfectly fine in Outlook 2010, but in 2013 we can't get it working. My idea is that this one also depends on the check on internet connectivity.

After spending some time looking into this, we have determined that we need to get a closer look at this through a more in-depth level of support. If you want to pursue some paid options, please visit the link below to see if there's something else available to better meet your needs: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx?RDPATH=%2fdefault.aspx%3fid%3dfh%253ben-us%253bofferprophone

Thanks,

Dawn

Any news on this ? I didn't open a ticket for this, as this clearly has to do something with changes on the 2013 version. I installed Fiddler on Outlook 2010 as well as on the Outlook 2013 machine, and I can clearly see network communication starting from Outlook 2010, but in Outlook 2013 there is no network traffic at all. So, clearly, the client is making some first checks on which he says that network features are not available or so, and therefore is even not trying to make a network connection.

How can I tell Office 2013 that there is a valid network connectivity ?

Hi Guy,

Like you said, this is an office 2013 issue. See my post here. I do not have a solution yet though.

I too am facing the same issue. Is there any solution. This happens with Microsoft Office 2013 and Sharepoint 2010.

Hello,

Yes, we managed to get Office 2013 to work perfectly again with his SharePoint connections. It was caused by the network awareness service of the Windows OS, or easily said the network icon on the bottom right status bar. If you are connected to an internal LAN with no direct internet connection, you will have to set up a local NCSI server. It requires some tricks on a web server and on a client PC (which you can enforce with a group policy), and suddenly your PC will think that he is connected to the internet. But luckily enough, it is only in terms of a status.

This article should help you to understand the concepts of NCSI : http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/data-center/what-do-microsoft-and-ncsi-have-in-common/

And this article should help you to set up a local NCSI server (look for create an internal NCSI server) : http://blogs.technet.com/b/networking/archive/2012/12/20/the-network-connection-status-icon.aspx

Hope you will get it working as well. We got it working !

we have exactly the same problem and it's not funny. Still one year later Microsoft has no solution for this?

We tried this solution and still have the issue.
