Cannot Install Exchange 2003 Enterprise on Cluster Passive NOde
IIS failed on Passive cluster node. Reinstallation required Exchange 2003. Exchange won't install.. Error says '- You must be running Exchange Enterprise Edition in order to install on a cluster'. I am using the same Exchange 2003 Enterprise CD that the entire Exchange cluster was originally built with. My Active node is running Exchange 2003 SP2. (the version number reported by the setup.exe file is 6.5.6944.0... and the setup.exe version under \setup\i386 is 5.00.1164.0). Rebuilt cluster node from scratch, installed IIS, SMTP, and NNTP. Tried to install Exchange 2003 Enterprise and get the same error message. Shutting down and restarting active node reveals no error in Exchange or cluster configuration. I cannot find out what is going wrong. Any suggestions?

Have you tried installing from from the SP2 media? -- Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems." . Ed: Thanx for the suggestion. I tried that per your suggestion... I received the same message. Furthermore, the SP2 files that I have are for upgrade. In any case, the system reports the same message. It is as if the CD setup file is corrupt or not reading properly. I am looking for another CD to test this, but I think my theory is highly unlikely. Thanx.

Actually, this last scenario shows that the Exchange Enterprise Edition CD is not defective because the SP2 data is on a different medium (hard drive), and cluster node reported that it was not the Enterprise edition as well. I noticed that the cluster node reports missing exres.dll and gathercl.dll files. I can't seem to find information that gives indepth information about how these .dll's are install and there nature. Are they relevant to this problem, i.e., is their absence causing the problem? Should they have been installed during server build? Can they be harmlessly moved to this node from another node? Should they be registered on the server?

I need to add that this error applies the 'Microsoft Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services' section only (I'll refer to it as MEMCS). Everything else can be installed. Of course, none of the other sections are cluster-relevant. I have actually installed the other sections with no problem. After installation, I tried to run the setup using the change feature, the MEMCS section rejects the Change with the same error - 'You must be running Exchange Enterprise Edition in order to install on a cluster'.

All I can suggest is that you make sure the media is really Enterprise Edition. If it isn't, download a new copy. -- Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems." . "Visdgns" wrote in message news:3dcd3c8b-2bbd-4284-b7de-d4a6cbc4e16f...
