Cannot Edit Mail-Merge Data Source from Word 'Mail Merge Recipients Dialog

When I attach an Excel Spreadsheet as a Mail-Merge Data Source and then try to edit it from the 'Mail Merge Recipients' Dialog:

I get the ERROR "The Microsoft Office Access database engine could not find the object...."

What has Access go to do with it and how can I get into the spreadsheet from here?

I am developing some Macros to add facilities to a 'Merge to E-mail', but this occurs whether or not these macro are loaded.  It occurs even with a new blank document!

Hi Brian

You'll find a broader spectrum of people who work with Word at the "end-user" level in the IT Pro forum on the TechNet server. It's been quite a while since I worked with mail merge intensively, so any help I can give on this would be more of the hit-and-miss kind. With your permission, I'll move the question?

FWIW most data connection methods to Excel use the Access drivers/providers, which is what Access has to do with it. By default, Word will choose the OLE DB connection method (others are ODBC and DDE, which are "deprecated" and "you mileage may vary").

Searching the error message on the Internet turns up a slew of hits, covering all sorts of things. Most relevant in the few I sampled:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/20417626/the-microsoft-office-access-database-engine-could-not-find-an-object
http://forums.asp.net/t/1841891.aspx?The+Microsoft+Office+Access+database+engine+could+not+find+the+object+

Are you getting the error when working as an end-user, or just with your code? Which action is triggering the error message?

Hi Brian,

As Cindy mentioned that Word IT Pro forum is more suitable to discuss the end-user issue since there are more experts who read the forums regularly can either share their knowledge or learn from your interaction with us.

I would to help moving this thread to that forum so that you can get more effective response.

Thanks for your understanding.

Regards & Fei
