Can you deploy EX 2007 on one Box due to edge server role
Can you delpoy EX 2007 on one Box, or do you need two to accomodate the edge server role. I have installed EX 2007 on a 64 bit box with the default roles, but cannot sent e-mail to the internet even with a send connector configured with a * domain name. Doc seems to say I need an edge transport role on a second box. Really just trying to set up a simple Ex 2007 server if that is possible.

ET server being the exchange smtp gateway must run on its own server, preferably in the dmz & not a member of the domain. However depending on your expected email load this could well be a virtual server with its own network card connected to the perimeter of your network. Be careful about deploying the ET server though as you will need additional licenses for Exchange & Windows on which it runs. On another thought, how does your send connector for all domains send mail? is it through DNS or through a smart host? Ihave a suspicionits through DNS & possibly you are either unable to resolve external host names / mx records from the exchange server or unable to telnet a remote host on port 25 to queue the mail. Try the follong commands from command prompt on your Exch Server and you should get similar output: nslookup> set type=mx> google.comServer: dns.srvAddress: 10.1.0.1:53 Non-authoritative answer:google.com MX preference = 10, mail exchanger = smtp1.google.comsmtp1.google.com internet address = 72.14.203.25>exit Telnet smtp1.google.com 25 You should get an smtp banner at the top of your screen If the first block doesnt work you have a problem resolving external dns addresses from inside your network, check the forwarders on your internal DNS server & firewall rules to make sure the internal dns is allowed to talk to the public dns on port 53. If the second one fails then you have a problem with connecting to remote servers on the default smtp port (25) from exchange, you need to open this communication channel up on your firewall. To receive external email though you will still need to have an smtp gateway since exchange 2007 "anonymous access" opens up smtp relaying which will cause your domain to be black listed if exposed to the internet.
