Can you always predict which 'From' email addresses are going to be used?
Hello, I have been recently using a SmartHost SMTP server (in my Exchange Server's settings) that requires that I identify in advance the exact domain names that are allowed to send emails through it. This is fine for the majority of email, which is sent 'From' email addresses within my company's domain name. Every day, however, I see attempts to send emails coming 'From' email addresses that are not within our company's domain name. I was wondering if this is expected Exchange behaviour - i.e. are there situations (such as when external people email us) where Exchange Server then forwards this email through the SmartHost as coming 'From' the external party's email address? Sorry for the complex nature of this question. Thank you

"Out of the box", an Exchange server will not relay email for other domains. You can check your message tracking logs in Exchange, or the source IP addresses in the smarthost's logs for those emails to verify.

Are some people using POP/IMAP? Older versions of Exchange allow this but Exchange 2007 onwards only allow a POP/IMAP user to reply as one of their configured proxy addresses. This can be disabled of course. A user logged in via OWA or using MAPI will always send as their primary SMTP address, unless third party products have been installed to override this.
