Can the deleted items retention time on Exchange cause a mailbox/storage group to get corrupted
When you move a mailbox can the deleted items retention time be an issue? When we move a mailbox to a new storage group/database, the old mailbox shows in the disabled mailboxes for 14 days, would that cause the mailbox to get corrupted? We do not have any AV on our server, so it is not a scanning of certain extension issue. No new hardware or changes. The backup has failed due to various reasons, however that is not a consistent issue/factor either.

Hello,An answer to your question is partially available athttp://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2009/01/30/450549.aspx.For the other part of your question where the origional mailbox remains disconnected I can not comment unless the version of Exchange you are using is known.M-Milind Naphade

Thanks for the reference article, we are on a single exchange server/active directory, so of what I am reading we do not need to worry about setting the deleted mailbox retention to 0 days. Our default is 14 days.We are on Exchange 2007 SP1Thanks

Hi, Im not clear about the situation you described. Your mailbox is corrupted right now? When we move a mailbox to a new storage group/database, the old mailbox shows in the disabled mailboxes for 14 days, would that cause the mailbox to get corrupted? After you moved the mailbox, the mailbox shows in disconnected mailbox list? Could you explain the situation for me? The backup has failed due to various reasons Please check the event log and paste any related error here for our further discussion. Thanks, Elvis

I am trying to determine:When I move a mailbox from storage group1/databaseone to storagegroup2/database2 do I need to change the deleted items retention from 14 to 0. If I do not do that can it cause the mailbox to get corrupted. After I move the above mentioned mailbox to the storagegroup2/database2, the mailbox appears in my disconnect mailbox for 14 days, Is it okay to stay there or do I need to delete it right away? Thanks

Hi, The behavior you described is abnormal. It should not be displayed in disconnected mailbox container. The issue can be caused by Exchange cannot write appropriate attribute to AD or other reasons. I suggest you try the following steps to troubleshoot the issue: 1. Please try the following command to run cleanup agent to see if we can clean the old mailbox Clean-MailboxDatabase -Identity <DatabaseIdParameter> 2. Please try to move one of the mailbox back to the original mailbox store. During the migration, it will notify you that the mailbox already exists on the destination Store, and prompt you to purge it. Choose the option to purge and let me know the result. If you change the retention time to 0, the disconnected mailbox should be purged during next maintenance time. I cant reproduce your issue in my lab, but I saw similar cases, the unwanted disconnected mailbox is disappeared after this and the user is not affected. Thanks, Elvis
