Can one AD user have more than one Exchange Mailbox?

Hi everybody,

I have one doubt - Can one Active Directory user have more than one Exchange mailbox? Because in Creating Exchange Server mailbox-enabled and mail-enabled objects in Active Directory "A mailbox-enabled object is a Windows 2000 Active Directory object that has one or more Exchange Server mailboxes associated with it." is written. So, I am confused.

Thanks & regards,

Talib Hussain

Hi SSorin,

Just to confirm about your reply, are you saying that the first part was mail user as given in Manage mail users: Exchange Online Help and the second part was mail contact as given in Manage mail contacts: Exchange 2013 Help?

Hi SSorin,

This still doesn't answer my question. If you couldn't understand, kindly ask for clarifications.

Hi talib2608,

i'm sorry,  the answer to the question "Can one Active Directory user have more than one Exchange mailbox? is no.

An AD User can have only one mailbox.

Best Regards

Hi SSorin,

Then the statement in the KnowledgeBase is wrong. It should be "A mailbox-enabled object is a Windows 2000 Active Directory object that has one Exchange Server mailbox associated with it." Am I right?

I don't know if you could use the phrase "The Knowledge Base is wrong"  It's atleast a 4 year old (and probably older) article that still references Windows 2000 AD Structures.  I don't go that far back with Exchange, but terminology has changed since then and who knows what the article is really trying to reference (could be referring to shared mailboxes or delegate mailboxes in that statement).  As of now it's a 1 to 1 Ad Account to Mailbox relationship.
