Can I use export-mailbox in an Exchange2003 org?
I have an org with with Exchange 2003 servers (no 2007 or 2010).I have some big mailboxes (>5gb) that I need to export to PST.Exchange 2007 SP1's export-mailbox command would be great - but can I run this command in an org that has no 2007 servers? Thanks.

Yep, just install Exchange 2007 SP1 management tools on a workstation where outlook 2003 SP2 or higher installed... Hmmm when I try to install Exchange Serever 2003 Management Tools SP1 (32-bit) on Vista I get:Organization PrerequisitesFailed Error:The Active Directory Schema must be modified and this user account has insufficient permissions. It must be a member of both the 'Schema Admins' and 'Enterprise Admins' groups.Recommended Action: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=30939&l=en&v=ExBPA.3&id=2fafe5d4-04e0-4c5a-a69f-7613d438131f Error:Global updates need to be made to Active Directory, and this user account is not a member of the 'Enterprise Admins' group.Recommended Action: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=30939&l=en&v=ExBPA.3&id=fb97f691-d7c3-40b6-8515-95fd489db46e Error:The local domain needs to be updated. Verify that the organization is ready for Exchange 2007 by running the Exchange 2007 Readiness Check, which is part of the Exchange Best Practices Analyzer. Since I have no Exchange 2007 servers in my org I have done none of the schema changes required for 2007.Do I have to apply the the 2007 schema changes in order to be able to install the Managemen Tools? That wouldn't be viable for me :-(Thanks!

James Chong just posted a trick in below thread to make management tools foolish by changing schema version to higher version and change it back after installation of tool... Check if that helps without updating schema for Exchange 2007 http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvradmin/thread/bb407079-c810-4d6d-900d-fe4c82ad22d2 Amit Tank | MVP Exchange Server | MCITP: EMA | MCSA: M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com

Hmm ... not terribly detailed instructions ;-)But I willset ms-Exch-Schema-Version-Pt=11116, try installing the Exchange 2007 Management tools, then set ms-Exch-Schema-Version-Pt back to 6870.If anybody has reservations with doing this in a production environment, please speak now or forever hold your peace :-)

Yes,rangeUpper value of Exchange 2007 SP1 is 11116 forms-Exch-Schema-Version-Ptso set it and try to install, that shouldn't harm anything in productionbecauseit is just a schema version detail... ;) But forprecautionI would say to take system state backup of Schema FMSO holder DC and go for this...Amit Tank | MVP Exchange Server | MCITP: EMA | MCSA: M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com

Some progress: I now get past the readiness checks - but it fails after that. On a 2008 server I get: Organization Preparation FailedAn error occurred. The error code was 3221684226. The message was The system cannot find the file specified..Copy Exchange FilesCancelled On a 2003 server I get Organization Preparation FailedActive Directory operation failed on hou-dc-0002.natcogroup.com. It may be a win2k8/Vista thing according to this article. Try installing the 32bit tools on an XP box. If you plan to run any Exchange 2007 Prepare switches on a Windows 2008 server then make sure to add the Active Directory Domain Services Remote Mangement tools using server manager or ServerManagerCMD -i RSAT-ADDS from the Windows 2008 server command prompt. Not installing this may result with the following error when running the Exchange 2007 SP1 with the /perpareAD parameter: [ERROR] An error occurred. The error code was 3221684226. The message was The system cannot find the file specified.. I have given up for now :-(Tried with XP, Vista, Windows7, Windows2008, Windows 2003 ...I think the best option now is likely to be to build up a standalone lab environment on a VHD image - in its own forest.

Hi Drew, I would like to explain that you can also refer to following KB to export a mailbox which is larger than 2GB: Error message when you use the ExMerge tool to export an Outlook 2003 mailbox to a .pst file: "The item could not be moved" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916085/en-us Mike Shen TechNet Subscriber Support in forum If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tngfb@microsoft.com

Sorry to be a hard-a$$ - but I don't really feel that counts as an answer to the orginal question, which was: "Can I use export-mailbox in an Exchange2003 org?"Instead it is a pretty inconvenient work-around.Since nobody has been able to give definitive confirmation that the Exchange 2007 Management Tools can be install in an Exchange 2003 forest/org - and I tried may different ways to make it work - it seems like the correct answer is probably "No."My best bet now is probably to build up a stand alone lab server in a VHD, install Exchange 2007 on it, and then try to run export-mailbox (since I believe the command is not org-centric).Thanks for the help and advice.
