Can't use search feature in a live database in Exchange 2007
Hello Everyone, I'm using Outlook 2010 (doesn't matter which version) and when I'm not using "Cached Exchange Mode", I'm unable to use the instant search feature that's included with Outlooks. All results come up instantly as no results. I'm running Outlook 2010 in a Exchange 2007 SP3 environment. There's no errors in the error log (on my workstation) stating that Outlook cannot do a search of the inbox. I've only found 1 error (on the exchange server) that might be related to this: Event Type: Error Event Source: Windows Search Service Event Category: Gatherer Event ID: 3083 Date: 1/25/2011 Time: 3:10:30 PM User: N/A Computer: EMAIL Description: The protocol handler Search.Mapi2Handler.1 cannot be loaded. Error description: Class not registered For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. Everything looks normal; it says 0 emails needs to be indexed. The only way of using the embedded search feature of Outlook is to use "Cached Exchange Mode". This problem is happening on all workstations in our organization and on different versions of Outlooks. Here's another part: I can't use the search feature in OWA. So it looks like I can't search through the live Exchange database. I've got "Microsoft Exchange Search Indexer" & "Microsoft Search (Exchange)" services running and set to automatic startup. I've also tried following http://support.microsoft.com/kb/94507 I did "ResetSearchIndex.ps1 -Force -All" but that work. I also have this thread open in Outlook IT Pro Discussions but it looks like more of an exchange issue now. Can anyone please help? Thanks, Daniel

Yeah, it certainly looks as if the Search Indexer service isn't doing its job. You might try initializing the index for the mailbox database in question. To do that, stop the MSExchangeSearch service, deleting the search folder (the one with the GUID where the database is), and then restarting the MSExchangeSearch service. You'll see the folder reappear. Watch the event log for any errors.Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."

Hi Ed, I've followed your steps and the solution listed here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesoftwareupdate/thread/20aebecb-46f9-43f7-9716-749a9d26e8d6. The search feature is working now; however, the folder did not reappear (I just renamed it instead of deleting it) and there are no errors in the log. Well... at least it's working now. Thank you for your help. -Daniel
