Can't send to external mail in Server 2003 SBS
New to server installation and everything seems to be fine, except my Exchange Server. I did the Server 2003 SBS full install and set the server to the recommended (.local) when maybe I should have set it to (.com). I can send email from user to user, but I cannot send to Hotmail or GMail or Yahoo. The error message states " Undeliverable" please contact mail.live.com to access this mail provider. I can re-install the server again if I have to, but I am told that it can be fixed without re-installation. Like I said I am new to server installs and I am diving head first into it. I am a computer repair tech with 15 years experience that knows his way around XP, VISTA, and 7 with everything from new installs to hardware repair, but never Server OS. So with that being said I am not completely computer challenged. If I can get a handle on the DNS / Exchange part of it I'm sure I can conquer the rest in a fair amount of time. I am willing to pay the yearly subcription to have someone login remotely and fix it. This way I can see how the DNS and Exchange is set up with the Forward and Reverse Lookup Zones. I hope to hear from you soon! Thank You Carl Bateman

Let us suppose that your domain is domain.com If your exchange server is the only server on the Internet that is supposed to receive emails meant for @domain.com, follow these steps and you should be good to go. 1) Under Exchange System Manager, go to Recipients ---> Recipient policies. 2) Right-click Default Policy , and then click Properties . 3) Click the E-Mail Addresses tab. 4) Here you will find your .local address 5) If you don't want your users to have @domain.local as their email address, then go ahead and click on Edit and change it to .com 6) Click on OK on all the windows and come back to the Exchange System Manager. 7) Right click on Default policy, click on Apply this policy now 8) Now go to Recipient Update Services on the left pane, right click on all the Recipient Update Services that you see on the right pane and click on Update Now 7) This @domain.com will be your default email address now. Hope this helps.

Hello, The LAN IP address DNS settings should point to itself, i.e. if the server is 192.168.1.2 then the LAN DNS should be 192.168.1.2 The in DNS forwarders tab, put in the public DNS that your ISP gives you or use googl DNS 8.8.8.8 or OpenDNS 208.67.220.220 Lastly, make sure that Exchange uses DNS to route Mail. Run the Mail wizard to do this... If you need help on how to access the LAN properties, the DNS forwarders or the Internet and E-mail wizard, just post back and I'll go into more detail good luck, ChazzieChazzie / IT Manager Advanced Door Controls, Inc.
