Hi,

If your .ost file becomes damaged, Outlook includes a tool that may be able to correct the problem. This tool, the OST Integrity Tool, can scan and repair .ost files. If that doesn't completely solve the problem, you can disable the .ost file and create a new one described by Simon.

To scan and repair the .ost file:

  1. Close Outlook.
  2. On the Start menu, click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type

    drive:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi\LocaleID\scanost.exe

where LocaleID is the locale identifier (LCID) for your installation of Microsoft Office. For example, the LCID for English (United States) is 1033. For a list of LCIDs, see Microsoft Office Help.

  4. Click OK.
  5. Click either Scan all folders or Choose folder to scan. If you click Scan all folders, this may take several minutes.
  6. Select the Repair errors check box.
  7. Click Begin Scan.

Details of actions performed during the scan and repair are saved as a message in your Outlook Deleted Items folder with the subject "OST Integrity Check."

If the Offline Folder file cannot be repaired, you can disable it and create a new one.

  1. On the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts, click View or change existing e-mail accounts, and then click Next.
  2. In the list, click Microsoft Exchange Server, and then click Change.
  3. Click More Settings.
  4. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Offline Folder File Settings.
  5. Click Disable Offline Use.
  6. In the File box, type the path to the file you want to use as the new .ost file. The default file name is outlook.ost. If this file name already exists, you are prompted for a new name.

Restart your PC and, without starting Outlook, go to Control Panel | User Accounts | Mail.

Click Show Profiles.

Select any profiles in the list and click Remove.

Click Add and fill in the details for a new profile.

Click OK as many times as necessary to save and close the profile.

Start Outlook.

If you are still having problems then they are not caused by a corrupt profile or corrupt OST file. Try repairing or removing and reinstalling Office. (Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features. Select Office, click Change, Select Repair, click Continue.)

Lets be clear about this. An OST file is simply a local cache of the items that are held in your mailbox on the Exchange Server. If an OST file is corrupt you can delete it and create a new one, by creating a new mail profile, and you will not lose any data. Your mail items will simply be downloaded from the server again.

There are very few instances where you would ever need to repair an OST file.

hii,

Sometimes when using MS outlook an error message is prompted cannot open your default email folders. The file outlook.ost is not an offline folder. This error may be because of many reasons when MS outlook not able to recognize ost file or when you unknowingly delete the email account for exchange mailbox in outlook.

You can solve the error by performing these steps;

>Close MS outlook and other application that may access the OST file.

>Find OST file that causes error- File location can be determine on the basis of property displayed in outlook.

>Recover the OST file offline data.

>Backup the original OST file.

>Rename or delete the original OST file that causes the problem.

>Fix the error.

  • If your MS outlook able to connect with exchange sever correctly then start outlook and send/receive your emails on exchange mailbox, which will create a new OST file automatically thereafter it will synchronize its data with exchange mail box.
  • Even if your problems are not getting solve then recreate your mail profile again.
