Can't move the database path
I have a server 2008 with exchange 2007 installed. Unfortunately the OS drive is on ly 40gb and both the \Users and the Exchange databases are on the C drive and it's full...don't ask, I didn't set it up... I'm trying to move the exchange path to the E: drive, but when I use the wizard, the Browse option is grayed out and if I try to say ok anyway it gives the following result. Summary: 1 item(s). 0 succeeded, 1 failed. Elapsed time: 00:00:00 Mailbox Database Failed Error: This operation cannot be performed on a remote server or a clustered mailbox server in a cluster continuous replication environment. Please use the -ConfigurationOnly option and then manually move the files. Parameter name: ConfigurationOnly Exchange Management Shell command attempted: move-DatabasePath -Identity 'XCHANGE\First Storage Group\Mailbox Database' -EdbFilePath 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Mailbox\First Storage Group\Mailbox Database.edb' -CopyEdbFilePath 'C:\First Storage Replication\Mailbox Database.edb' Elapsed Time: 00:00:00 Is it a permissions thing that I'm missing?

Is it a node of CCR? If so, follow below guideline... How to Move a Database in a CCR Environment http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997646.aspxAmit Tank | MVP Exchange Server | MCITP: EMA | MCSA: M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com

Sorry for the wild goose chase, I was told the exchange had been migrated from an existing server to the new server, all the mailboxes (except one) already had been which was what was confusing me. Apparently the previous IT company did not leave ANY of the disks on site and basically refuse to give them up along with the license codes...as a result the other tech couldn't complete the new exchange install since he was lacking the key. What I'm still confused about is where the old server is storing the messages on the new server. When I look under Recipient\Mailbox and look at the users, it says there which server the mailbox is stored. I can't see anywhere to tell it where the mailbox store should be when they're on the other server...I tried moving a mailbox back to the old server hoping it would free up some space but it didn't. Would it have left a copy on the new server? Any thoughts?

Hi,Following on from Amits comments and your current reply.Moving a mailbox will not physically shrink the size of the database. It will create whitespace once online maintenance has run. Claiming back space requires an offline defrag - something that isn't really recommended - especially in your scenario where you can move mailboxes. If you have no mailboxes left - simply dismount and delete the stores - then recreate them for a nice clean empty database.Read: "Understanding Exchange Database Disk Consumption" http://www.msexchange.org/articles/Exchange-Databases-Disk-Consumption.htmlIt's a little old but relevant to 2007.Oliver

Ah, thank you very much. One thing that is not clear to me though is how to change where the store is when it's on a second server. On the old server the first and second store are in the default location C:\program files\microsoft\exchange\... Does that mean that if I were to move a mailbox from the old server and assign it to the new server that it'll end up in the same path but on the new server primary drive? Second question: Is the new server Exchange install actually doing anything at this point since it is unlicensed and the trial period has expired? Can I uninstall it?

Hi, no problem. If the Second Server (CMS?) is a CCR Server like your first - then follow Amits guide on moving the location of the database/s.I don't quite follow 'Does that mean that if I were to move a mailbox from the old server and assign it to the new server that it'll end up in the same path but on the new server primary drive?'A mailbox will be located to whichever database you move it too. Can you expand? In regards to the Second Server - if it isn't a Clustered Mailbox Server (CMS) then it can be multi-roled - you must clarify the configuration of this Server.OliverOliver Moazzezi | Exchange MVP, MCSA:M, BA (Hons) Anim http://www.exchange2007.com http://www.exchange2010.com http://www.cobweb.com
