CAL Licenses 2013 compatibility

Dear Friends,

I am using One Exchange 2010 Server Standard with 100 Exchange 2010  CAL Standard Licenses, i have requirement for more licenses, i understand There is no limitation in Microsoft Exchange to add more users even though we have only 100 licenses.

But to have compliance with Agreement of Microsoft i would like to buy.

NOW IF I BUY EXCHANGE 2013 CAL Licenses, can i use that in Exchange 2010 Server Environment (I mean from Microsoft Compliance prospective), One of the Customer Desk Executive of Microsoft said NO....Kindly Confirm.

This isn't a licensing forum. You will need to ask a licensing vendor.

You really need to contact your licensing rep to discuss licensing.  almost everyone here on the forum aren't equipped to answer licensing questions.

Hi,

According to your description, I understand that the issue is related to licenses . This forum focuses on some general discussion about Exchange .

For licensing question, we must redirect them to customer service.

Thank you for your understanding.

Hi,

I confirm that you can using your 2013 Exchange Server CALs to have Access to your Exchange Server 2010.

on the Microsoft document, we have the following:

"An Exchange CAL gives a user or device the right to access any edition of Exchange of the same or earlier version. (You cannot use an earlier-version CAL to access a later-version server.)"

thanks

Yes, you can. You have the 'downgrade right'  to use older version of software. This applies to most (if not all) Microsoft software.

Hi Vijay,

YEs, reconfirming what others have said Ex2013 CALs covers Ex2010 CALs. Here are some references confirming the same. Please go through to understand more.

Please note that, if you are in doubt, don't use it and consult a licensing vendor\consultant.

https://www.directionsonmicrosoft.com/licensing/2012/12/downgrades-are-key-license-compliance

Many server productssuch as Windows Server and Exchange Serverrequire a CAL for each client user or device. CALs license a client's access to all instances of the server product running within the organization, and the version of the CAL must match or exceed the version of the server software the client encounters.

A common noncompliant scenario of this type is a customer who purchased Office Professional Plus licenses but deployed Office Standard. Although somewhat counterintuitive, Office Professional Plus licenses do not include edition downgrade rights to Office Standard.

They are limited to the same functional editions within each version (for example, Windows 10 Enterprise downgrades to Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise or Windows 7 Enterprise; however, Windows 10 Pro doesnt downgrade to Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise or Windows 7 Enterprise).

Version downgrade rights across most of Microsoft products are discussed in the "Downgrade rights for Microsoft Volume Licensing, OEM, and full-package product licenses" licensing brief at www.microsoft.com/licensing/about-licensing/briefs/downgrade-rights.aspx.
