Blue Screen of Death! Help Please! Brand New Computer!
I am also having a similar problem I recieved a brand new Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop, with Windows Vista, and I've been using it only here and there for the past three days. Since then, I have only downloaded Windows Live Messenger, I have not made any other changes to the computer, but for some reason, I very frequently get Bluescreens, that are truly starting to annoy me. They seem to come up randomly, sometimes when I go to open Internet Explorer, Other times when it tries to open a file using Adobe 8, and even once in the middle of spider solitaire. The Dell website suggests that I write down the stop error, but it moves to fast on the screen, and I can't get it down in time. No critical events occured on my computer recently, there were no failures in the reliabitity monitor, the BIOS were up to date, and Windows Vista did not find any solutions to my problem. But, when I got to this step, I did find something, " Click the Start button. Type cmd in the search box. Right-click cmd.exe and left-click Run As Administrator. In the User Account Control window, click Continue. In the cmd.exe window, type sfc /scannow and press the <Enter> key. The System File Checker starts and checks the integrity of system files." The results were that : Verification is 99% complete. Windows Ressource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.log windir\CBS\CBS.log. For example: C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log also, I've ran McAFee Virus Scan and muliple Avast! scans, which have turned up nothing. im perplexed, how do I fix this and what went wrong? I havent even had the computer a week, and I'm already having troubles. Any input is greatly appreciated!-hiliary

I can't believe Dell can't be of more assistance. Generally blue screens are a hardware driver issue. Have you looked at your event logs to see if there are any clues? http://www.computerperformance.co.uk/vista/vista_event_viewer.htm

i was on the phone yesterday for two hours with dell, they walked me through a system restoration, but I'm still having issues. To see if theproblem was really gone (I had doubts thatit was) as soon as my computer was restored, I went through the same error checking that I hadgone through beforeI restored my computer, and I found the same problems. Inmy event log, multiple programs have beenfailing, andmmc.exe, windows system assesment tool and windows modules installer, have failed multiple times, andin the Problem Reports and Solutions,Windows cannot find any solutionsto my problems. Other than the one blue screen of death, when these processes end, it doesnt seem to have much of an effect on my computer, but I feel that I paid a lot for this computer, if things are corrupt, and could potentially cause problems in the future, then I want to know now so I can have it fixed and get on with it. This is why I've been posting on this site, because I kind of need some advice, do you think these problems are something I should just ignore and are irrelevent? (Could they cause me problems in the future?) or am I simply making a big deal out of nothing? thanks for the input!

Since it is a new machine, return it and get it replaced. I had similar experiences and I do not ever put up with a new PC and ANY errors. I try the restore once, if it fails, it goes back where it came from, period. You are wasting your time on it, you will get frustratedand it will not get any better. You need to accept that even new equipment may at times be faulty, and Dell knows that too, although they may try to avoid a replacement. Insist and insist!

i can't believe no one has asked you this but what does the blue screen say? please post what it says fully, if it just hangs on the screen for a split second then i'd wager the issue is either RAM or HD failure.

Does it matter? Most of the time it is useless information for the average user, and in this particular case, it is brand new PC, so, back to the store it should go.

I also have same issue with Inspiron 1420 that has got 'installed' on 26th Dec( a real 'boxing' turned out a wrong gift). No one can say, new hardware/software, it happened in the presence of installation guy, and he is not able to comment as he is just a verifier. As I got the problem , I called up Dell, and a service engineer asked me to send the dump files, that are stored in minidump folder in Windows directory. I did it and waiting for their respone. You also can do the same thing , I suggets. I think it could be because of eitherincompatible drivers or bad memory module. As I am getting diff error code each time, is there any chance of bad memory error, lets see... And i have downloaded the form for filing suite in consumer forum.. And you can get the error code (STOP error code) from the event viewer, see with the description BugCheck..and sue Dell with all will as we paid money not to see blue screen but to work on it. see if it helps you http://aumha.org/a/stop.htm --kool.rens

When it is a new PC, why on earth do you put up with that? They need to replace it, period, no arguments.

Hello. Ihave ablue screen problem... My Inspirion 2200 won't boot.. the blue screen message blinks for about 2 seconds so I can't read the meessage whichviruses I manage to download.... Did the diagnostics using the Dell utility disc and have three error messages: - 650F:075D Message: IDE device failed. The self-test failed the read portion of the test -650F 0244 Block 39064072 Uncorrectable data error or media is write protected -650F 1A44 Block 39064072 Uncorrectable data error or media is write protected Really don't want to lose data I have on this laptop...(family pictures for the past two years..) 1. Is there any chance to freeze the blue screen so as I can read the message and act accordingly ? 2. Is there a way to access the OS from DOS ? I would really appreciate your help... thank you

that means your HD has failed. there are apps you can buy to recover the data. as for accessing it from dos, u can start it up from the recovery console. you'll need a windows disk or you can buy an app like ERD made by winternals (Microsoft bought them though). easiest thing to do would be to remove the HD, buy a IDE adapter for a laptop, plug the hd in to that and plug it into the usb port of another machine. if the hd is still good, you should be able to view your data long enough to retrieve it. however, 2 yrs worth of pics and you don't back up?
