On Servers--> myServer--> Protocols--> SMTP--> General--> Advanced--> Edit--> You have to check the box to apply the filter.

This may have done it. Not sure. I don't know how to track mail that was rejected. I used to get 2-3 a day. During the holidays it looked like it slowed down to 1.5 a day. Now I'm not sure if these guys are on hiatus for the holidays or if this latest tweak did the trick. I will monitor this daily till Jan 4th and see if it resumes or not and reply here then (or sooner if I still see these guys in my inbox).

you could either raise the logging level for transport / imf (be sure to remmeber what you edit),or use message tracking if enabled, orenable & use the iis loggingand start looking for the smtpcodes.. have fun ps preformance countersIMF could beinformativetoo.. ilan.

How is mail delivered to your server? If you run SBS with the POPconnector to download mail from your ISP filtering will not work. It only works if mail is delivered with SMTP to your server.

The Exchange POP Connector service is disabled. It just comes in as SMTP. My ISP is not in the picture. They supply static IP andRDNS entries in support of IP and my domain names. I run my own DNS and have 3rd party DSN acting as my secondary servers. I'm assuming many of the configuration settings, even those discussed here are dynamic and a reboot of stop/start of Exchange is not required.

Did you turn on logging? Could you provide a sample from your IIS/SMTP logs

I turned on some Exchange logging but it hasn't caught anything yet. Not sure I got the right ones. Here is an edited SMTP Log. They used my SMTP Id as part of the FROM address. This mail is coming from 11.222.33.4, Do this IP belong to your network? is all incoming mail coming from this IP? On Global Settings/Message delivery, do have included some IP's in the "Perimeter IP List and Internal IP Range Configuration"

Are you running any Antivirus or antispam software for Exchange on your server? they sometimes interfere with the built in functionality in Exchange, then you must configure this kind of filtering in the other software

No antivirus software yet. This is a new rebuild (new server, and upgraded SBS Standard to SBS Premium R2). It has a LinkSys router between server/lan and DSL box. There are 2 other routers attached to primary router. All static IPs (internal IPs and external IPs all static). I don't claim to know the internals of Exchange or the history behind how it grew from v1.0 to now, but I am aware of other software that behaves like it does for backward compatibility. But I just cannot get past why I have to go to 2-4 different parts of Exchange to state I don't want any mail from"my list of domains".

It is not that hard to configure sender filtering. In the organizational level, enter those domains or addresses you want to block and then on each individual Virtual SMTP server enable this check or not.

On my server where Doug specifies, there were 3 optional check boxes and when I created the rule(s) it must have automatically checked the "filter received messages".
