We're getting ready to migrate users into Exchange 2013, from 2010, and everything seems to work fine except Bing Maps. The other apps that I've tried seem to work, but when Bing Maps detects an address in an email, you click the button, and it says "We think we're found an address" (or addresses), then it pans to the right and says "There was an error contacting Bing Maps. Please try again later." Since I've set up the server, I've never done any configuring of this, or any other, app, so is there something I'm missing? Is there a log somewhere I could check? What could possibly be the problem?

Please check whether the Bing Maps app works in OWA. If the issue also happens in OWA for all users, please click Settings > Options > Apps in OWA, then check whether Bing Maps is Enabled in the list.

If the issue doesnt happen in OWA but only in Outlook, please update your Outlook 2013 with the latest patches and service packs. Then check whether the issue persists.

It happens with the latest patches and SP's with Outlook 2013 on Windows 8.1 (again, latest patches prior to yesterday), and the Windows 10 tech preview. The only thing "abnormal" about our environment is split DNS. Our domain ends with .local while the outside world sees a .edu.

I didn't do absolutely anything, but Bing Maps suddenly worked once, randomly, in Outlook. I clicked the Bing Maps link, and the map interface came up correctly, so I showed a couple co-workers. I clicked another message, then went back to the original, and Bing Maps failed again. Just to reiterate, it was the same message, worked once, will no longer work. No other message works at all. Nothing whatsoever was changed.

Please run the following command in Exchange 2013:

Set-OrganizationConfig -AppsForOfficeEnabled $True

Then force an update by recycling the MSExchangeServicesAppPool application pool in Internet Information Services (IIS) manager.

Generally, the AppsForOfficeEnabled parameter value is stored in the msExchProvisioningFlags attribute in Active Directory. Please follow the KB below to check this attribute in ADSI Edit:

The AppsForOfficeEnabled is already enabled, and always has been. The "Bing Maps" link DOES APPEAR, but it DOES NOT WORK. When you click the Bing Maps link, it says "There was an error contacting Bing Maps. Please try again later." The app IS ENABLED, but IS BROKEN.

Just want to know what's the exact version of our Exchange 2013 server? I noticed there is a known issue which is fixed in CU5:

Default apps in Outlook Web App do not work if Exchange is installed in Window Server 2012 R2 https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2938292

When you install Microsoft Exchange Server 2013 on a Window Server 2012 R2-based computer, default apps (such as Bing map and Action item) in Outlook Web App do not work.

So I suggest we upgrade the server to 2013 CU5 and check if any updates.

We're on CU6, with all the updates and patches installed. We are running it on 2012 R2 though, if that means anything now.

And according to the support team: Since 05/29/2014, Microsoft has received several reports of an issue:
The Bing Maps app feature in OWA recognizes when a contact or email includes a physical location. When you click the link for Bing Maps in the item, the window changes and briefly displays, We think weve found an address. But then this is immediately replaced with the error, "There was an error contacting Bing Maps. Please try again later.

It seems this application is still being perfect.

As far as I can tell, that thread is full of people having the same problem, but no solutions have been found. The other big difference is that they're hosted on Office 365, while my installation is entirely on-premises. So to answer your question, no, nothing in that thread has been of much help.

I just experienced this issue.

Toggling the flag msExchProvisioningFlags in adsiedit, then verifying it was correct ("0" in my case) immediately cleared up the issue.  All the default apps now work in OWA and Outlook.

Set-OrganizationConfig -AppsForOfficeEnabled $True (I toggled $false then $True and forced replication).

Change was almost immediate.

I don't think you were experiencing the same issue. The problem is that Bing Maps appears as an app in both OWA and Outlook, but when you click it, it occasionally works, but most of the time fail, with the error "There was an error contacting Bing Maps. Please try again later." I've tried re-setting the AppsForOfficeEnabled flag multiple times, but it's never done any good.

I can confirm. "There was an error contacting Bing Maps. Please try again later." Tried toggling the flag also. Any help appreciated (sitting on CU9).

Any update on this situation? New install of exchange 2013 on Server 2012 R2. Running latest CU9 and no bing maps/action items... nothing seems to work. This is in OWA and Outlook 2013.
