Best choice for Server 2003 R2
I have a limited machine with 512 MB of memory, I was wondering which version of exchange would be best for the machine. Machine will be 99% web server My MVP is for the Windows Desktop Experience, i.e. Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 IT Remote Assistance is available for a fee. You might be out of luck with 512MB. Get more RAM Exchange 2010 http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd346700.aspx Exchange 2007 http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996719(EXCHG.80).aspx I wouldn't bother with Exchange 2003. Sukh

MY machine is 32-bit for the moment. I checked the downloads and I did not see a 32-bit version of exchange 2007 so I am stuck for 2003 for now The trials were all they had My MVP is for the Windows Desktop Experience, i.e. Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 IT Remote Assistance is available for a fee. Then you can have Exchange 2003. Your RAM will meet the requirements. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc164322(EXCHG.65).aspx FYI Exchange 2007 Eval (32bit) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyId=444C259E-605F-4A82-96D5-A2F448C9D4FF&hash=2fuM4rN05f7b4sVhkWLJJJqJMrOwfv8H%2bIGGAzzAODuMNiUoxtmzxd27uA%2bsxdJpL2OyaZqw4Ue8Q6phDlsblw%3d%3d Sukh

I was disappointed the x86 edition is trial only. This means I have no choice for a full server stack. Let's you install the roles you need, For testing it's fine. Full server stack, for testing or labs it's fine for 120 days. http://blogs.technet.com/b/scottschnoll/archive/2006/12/31/exchange-2007-platforms-and-product-keys.aspx Sukh

I am not using exchange 2003 with Server 2008 but I am using sharepoint 2007 I am now using a virtual machine on the workstation until I can get a better machine to host it natively. Do you have to use Exchange? With a machine with that low power, plus Sharepoint, it is going to be thrashed. I would suggest using something else, such as SmarterMail. That will also remove the need to run Active Directory, particularly if the machine is going to be hosting publicly available web sites. Sharepoint and Exchange don't play well together (it can be done, but you have to make a lot of changes). Exchange 2007 and higher are 64 bit only applications, the 32 bit is trial only to give people the chance to look at the product before purchasing a higher end server. This isn't a problem as pretty much every server sold in the last 4 or 5 years has been 64 bit compatible. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP Blog | Exchange Resources | In the UK? Hire Me.

I have upped Server 2008 in a VM with 1 GB of memory where it seems to be fine. I use the machine for development, entertainment and more so its a nuisance with the VM running. Eventually I will put Server 2008 R2 on a machine but I need to find a CPU to do that. Still using Server 2008 in Virtual PC is helpful to become more familiar with the administration. One problem is that some Intel machines lack hardware support for virtualization. This is a real nuisance that has forced me to reconsider every thing I procure. If I can get more work this year I will be able to assemble a better server.
