Auto Delete emails older then X days
We have a mailbox that we forward SPAM messages to so we can recover them if needed to in the case of a false positive. I have to go in weekly and delete these out so the mailbox doesnt get overloaded and i was wondering if there was some automated way to do this. We were able to do it years ago on Exchange 2003 but i havent figured out how to do it in 2007. Any ideas how to set messages older then a week to auto delete?

Create a new Storage Group and mailbox database 2. Properties of the mailbox database -> limits -> Deletion settings -> keep deleted items for (days) -> change it to 7. 3. Log on as that user via OWA 4. Create a rule to move to the deleted items This should do the try for you.

I dont have any available Storage Groups, Using all the ones i have available with 2007 Std.

ok...go to property of the user mailbox -> mailbox settings -> and under deletion item retention and uncheck the check box. You can set the retention time there.

Deletion item retention is for email that has been "emptied" from the Deleted Items folder. If the rule just moves them to the folder then it wont make use of the retention period since they havent been emptied yet.

Im looking at Managed Folder Mailbox Policies. If i create a policy for my SPAM mailbox and assign it to the Managed Default Folder "Inbox". Then i can set the retention period on that folder will it only affect mailboxes i apply the policy to or will it affect ALL users inboxs? I dont want to end up cleaning out all users inboxs except for the last 7 days!

*scratching my head* Try this. 1. Go to EMC -> Org Config -> Mailbox -> managed Folder Mailbox Policies and create a policy called i.e. Deleted Items 2. Go to EMC -> Org Config -> Mailbox -> Managed Default Folders and right click on Inbox (can be the entire mailbox if you want) and select New Managed Content Settings 3. Give it a new and check the "length of retention days (days)" = 7 4. The drop down box for "retention period starts" = leave as default 5. In the Action to take at the end of the retention period -> select either "delete and allow recovery" or "permanently delete" 6. Go to the properties of the user mailbox -> mailbox settings -> messaging records management and check the managed folder mailbox policy and select the Deleted Items policy. I think that is it.
