Attempts to create chart from incomplete data crashes Excel

Hello, I couldn't find any place to report bugs for Office so I am opening a thread here. The following steps reproducably crash Excel 2013 for me:

1. Create new spreadsheet
2. Write a two ("2") into cell A1
3. Select cells A1-B1
4. On the ribbon, click Insert -> XY scatter plot -> 2nd plot type (points with interpolated lines)

As soon as I hover over the 2nd XY scatter plot type, Excel crashes. Event log shows a little bit more info: Error code 0xc0000374 (STATUS_HEAP_CORRUPTION) in ntdll.dll. Top of call stack:

ntdll.dll!RtlReportCriticalFailure()
ntdll.dll!RtlpHeapHandleError()
ntdll.dll!RtlpLogHeapFailure()
ntdll.dll!RtlFreeHeap()
oleaut32.dll!MemFree()
oleaut32.dll!VariantClear()
MSO.DLL!00007ffbae8f87b4()
OART.DLL!00007ffbb19b8293()
OART.DLL!00007ffbb19b7fab()
...

Using Excel 2013 on Windows 8.1 x64 with all latest Windows and Excel updates installed, also happens in safe mode of Excel.

Hope this helps. If you need any more information, let me know.

Hi,

As far as I know, this is an known issue about XY scatter chart. Please try the following methods and check if they are helpful.

Method One:

If you are using Excel 2013 64bit version , I recommend you try to use Excel 2013 32bit versionl.

Method Two:

Select an empty cell and insert a scatter chart, and then select data by contextual menu.

Method Three:

Disable Live Preview. (Click File>Option>General)

George,

thanks for your reply. I can't test with 32 bit Office since I do not have that version at hand. If this bug is already known I hope it gets fixed sometime in a future reliability update. The bug seems to be relatively common, I stumbled upon the issue a few times myself. I haven't found out what exactly triggers it, as it sometimes not only happens with incomplete data but also with perfectly valid data.
