Attachment Size Limit for individual user

Dear All,

Understand that there is a global setting to configure attachment size limit in Hub Transport, however it will apply to all users. Is there a setting which can limit the attachment size for individual user? (not message size).

I wish to configure it to 0kb in order to disallow user to attach any file attachment.

Current version: Exchange Server Standard 2007 sp2

Thanks.

There is no way to set an attachment size limit.  The only method Exchange supports is a total message size limit.  A rule of thumb is to make the message size limit about 30% greater than the largest attachment you want them to be able to send or receive.  You can configure the maximum message per user with Set-Mailbox -MaxReceiveSize and -MaxSendSize.

Hi Tan,

You can check if your version of Exchange has Attachment inspection in Transport rules. It should allow you to achieve what you are looking for.

Can I block attachments larger than a specific size?

Yes, there is a Transport Rule condition that can be used for this in Exchange Server 2007 and Exchange Server 2010:

  • when the size of any attachment is greater than or equal to limit

You can catch messages with attachments larger or equal to specific size (in KB) and apply any of the Transport Rule actions. An organization may use this to prevent large files via email, and to encourage the use of SharePoint sites for collaboration instead.

That's an interesting idea.  While not a limit, you could certainly block messages to and/or from a specific user with a transport rule.
