Asking for advice on a running emergency... Recovering mail from one mailbox store to another for the same user...
Hi all,
My Mailbox Store in which reside all the mailboxes of my clients does not mount. I'm trying to recover it. But I need to get up the mail service for my organization in between the original mailbox is restored.
I want to create another Mailbox Store in order to allow users send and receive mail. When the original database is restored I plan to move the mail stored there to the new Mailbox store.
First I tried to create a MailboxStore2 in the same "First Storage Group" that is restoring the original "Mailbox Store". It failed. Looks like it needs to open the "Mailbox Store" but it is not available.
Then I created a "Third Storage Group" and successfully created a Mailbox Store in it. The problem is now how to move the users to the new Mailbox store. Obviously from Exchange System Manager (ESM) I can not "Move" tha mailbox because the source mailbox
is not mounted. I tryed "Disable" the mailbox and then "New Mailbox" for the existing users and it works. The testing users is now able to send and receive mail.
The BIG question is: When the restoe of the original "First Storage Group/Mailbox Store" is finished (in 4-5 hours) I could be able to move the restored e-mails to the new store?
Any advice is welcomed
Thanks in advance
Sammy

About now is the point you need to stop what youre doing.
If you need to get your email service up and running right now without waiting for a repair or restore then I would suggest you do a Dial Tone which is the act of moving all email database files and logs out of their current locations and then mounting
the store. It will mount cleanly with a couple of warnings.
Once youve done that and the immediate pressure is off you can research the Recovery Storage Group (I assume youre on 2003 because you mentioned Exchange System Manager which does not exist in 2007/2010 by that name).

Just abandon what you were doing with that second and third store.

Hi Mark,
Thanks for your advice.
Oops...! I misstep my post talking about Exchange System Manager, sorry...
The Management Console/Microsoft Exchange/Server Configuration says "Exchange server version Version 8.1 (Build 240.6)"
At the Management Console About dialog it is displayed as "Exchange Server 2007 Version: 08.01.0436.000"
And the Management Console itself says version 3.0...

Broadly the same. Google for slightly different words.
The concept of the dial-tone is the same and its still the RSG. Microsoft calls it something else in 2010 since there are no storage groups.

Mark is of course correct on this i.e.
Execute a Dial Tone restore
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb310773(EXCHG.80).aspx Make sure you have a good copy of the current database files EDB and LOGS
If you are going to attempt to repair the existing database and then merge the data back into the new production stores be sure you are always and only working with a copy that way if something goes wrong you have a way to start over.
If you want a more intuitive way to look at the old damaged database and then transfer the information back into the production server check out Lucid8's DigiScope
