Archiving (post SP1)
Hiya,
We are looking to use the archiving feature in EX2010 SP1 and have some questions regarding the implementation. We will be putting the archive mailbox databases on a seperate Ex 2010 SP1 server.
1) What are the best practices around disk config. on the seperate server. Our main Exchange box is using SAN so it has different LUNs for each database's log file/database file pair, but the secondary server will be local storage, so do we still need the
traditional RAID 1 for log files and RAID 5/10 for database files or do the archive mailboxes only require database files, with the log file usage on the main mailbox server
I guess i'm asking if there is an architecture difference between archive mailboxe databases and proper mailboxe databases.
2) I guess the only role required on the second server is Mailbox database
Thanks

Hello Hiya
1) I would recommend you to use local storage for Archive Mailbox Database bcoz already you have one database on SAN, Another thing is you use another server as a secondary mailbox role installed on it and configured Raid 1 for Operating system Raid 5 for
both Logs and Database on seperate Partitions.
2) Yes you should install only mailbox role.

Hiya Lanky,
As MHussain says only the Mailbox server role is required on a server dedicated to mailbox databases.
For database sizing the database design is identical to the primary databases. Whilst it's fine to use DAS/local storage (in fact, it's encouraged) it's important to ensure the storage design is still correct. Of course, with Exchange 2010 you can use 2TB
SATA disks for both online archive and normal mailboxes :-)
